Former Fulham goalkeeper John Vaughan has died at the age of 62, Fulham announced on X on Thursday. The club said it was saddened by his passing and sent condolences to his family, friends and former teammates.

Vaughan spent two seasons at Craven Cottage from 1986 to 1988 after joining from West Ham United.

He made 44 league appearances and held a regular place before Jim Stannard’s arrival. He was named Fulham’s Supporters’ Player of the Year and was in goal for the club’s 10-0 Littlewoods Cup defeat to Liverpool.

After leaving Fulham in 1988, Vaughan joined Cambridge United, where he had the most successful spell of his playing career.

He spent five seasons there, made 231 appearances in all competitions and helped the club secure successive promotions between 1989 and 1991.

Vaughan later played for Charlton Athletic, Preston North End and Lincoln City before retiring. He moved into coaching and worked as a goalkeeping coach at York City, Macclesfield Town, Grimsby Town, Huddersfield Town, Birmingham City, Barnsley and Bradford City. At the time of his death, he was an academy coach at Sheffield United.

Cambridge United also paid tribute to Vaughan, recalling his contribution during a memorable era in the club’s history.
