Procedural issues seemingly cost the Kansas City Chiefs a good shot at scoring the go-ahead touchdown in the waning moments of their game against the Denver Broncos on Sunday.
Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes thought he had a touchdown that would have put the team up at least two points with a second to play. However, a false start penalty on right tackle Jaylon Moore moved Kansas City backward. Mahomes would get sacked on the next play and Denver would take home the victory and move into first place in the AFC West.
Travis Kelce was frustrated with the team’s errors that have bubbled up, according to him, since the team returned from the bye week. He let loose when talking to reporters after the game.
"We got a lot of fight. You gotta take the positives out of this. You can’t dwell on it," he said, via The Athletic. "It’s a pretty good football team. Obviously, in our hearts, we feel like we should have came out with a victory, but at the same time, that’s not the reality of things. The reality of things is we got to fix a lot.
"And the little things, mistakes, and it starts with the person that you’re looking at in the mirror. I’m one of them. I’ve been frustrated with myself on how long I’ve been in the league and the procedural stuff that’s happened for the past three games, really. Really since the bye and it’s frustrating. You just can’t f---ing do it. I gotta be better for my teammates and that sets the tone for a lot of people in this room. Everybody’s just gotta up the ante from that."
Kelce had five catches for 67 yards in the 28-24 loss. Kansas City was penalized 11 times for 105 yards, but the team didn’t commit any turnovers during the game.
Kansas City will leave Week 8 behind the Broncos in the win column but a win over the Las Vegas Raiders earlier in the year has proven to be crucial thus far.
The Chiefs will head back home after being on the road for the last two weeks. They will welcome the New York Jets into town in Week 9.
