All SA-born players with goals in the UEFA Champions League

There are SEVEN South African-born players who have scored in the UEFA Champions League with Aden McCarthy being the latest…

South African players have long been involved in the UEFA Champions League over the years.

And this season, that list grew longer with former Kaizer Chiefs defender Aden McCarthy making his debut with Sabah FK.

McCarthy made his third UEFA Champions League appearance for Sabah against Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday night.

The 22-year-old centre-back even scored his first goal for Sabah in that 2-1 defeat to the Bundesliga giants.

As a result, McCarthy became the SEVENTH South African-born player to score in the history of the UEFA Champions League.

The last South African-born player to score in the tournament is none other than Thulani Serero in 2013.

On that day, Serero scored the opening goal as Ajax Amsterdam stunned Barcelona 2-1 in the group stage in what was their first defeat of the season.

ALL SEVEN SA-BORN PLAYERS WITH GOALS IN THE UEFA CHAMPIONS LEAGUE

  • Benni McCarthy – 8 goals

  • Quinton Fortune – 2 goals
  • Bennet Mnguni – 1 goal
  • Nassief Morris – 1 goal
