Asante Kotoko open talks with Romanian coach Marian Marinică over vacant head coach role

Asante Kotoko have reportedly entered into discussions with experienced Romanian coach Marian Marinică as the club intensifies its search for a new head coach following the departure of Eric Tinkler.

The Porcupine Warriors are keen to appoint a permanent manager to lead the club for the remainder of the 2026/27 season, with Marinică emerging as one of the leading candidates for the vacant position.

The 61-year-old boasts extensive coaching experience across Africa, having managed the national teams of Malawi and Liberia before taking charge of Zimbabwe in November 2025.

His familiarity with African football, coupled with years of coaching at both club and international level, is believed to have made him an attractive option for the Kumasi-based giants.

Marinică has also built a diverse managerial résumé in club football, with previous spells at South African side Black Leopards and Romanian club Rapid București, among several other teams during his coaching career.

Although talks between both parties are said to be progressing, no agreement has yet been reached, and Kotoko are expected to continue evaluating their options before making a final decision.

Kotoko head into the search on the back of an encouraging run of results. Their recent victory over Young Apostles lifted them to eighth place in the Ghana Premier League standings with 11 points after seven matches.

The Reds will now turn their attention to their next league assignment, where they face regional rivals AshantiGold 04, as the club continues efforts to appoint a new manager capable of guiding them back into the title race.
