There’s a new speedy winger at Kaizer Chiefs. Amakhosi have signed former Sekhukhune United and Esperance attacker Elias Mokwana.
The Soweto giants have further announced the 27-year-old will wear the jersey number that was formerly worn by the legendary Simphiwe Tshabalala.
Hailing from KwaMhlanga in Mpumalanga, Mokwana returns to Mzansi after two seasons in Tunisia and Saudi Arabia.
Known for his blistering pace, agility and dribbling ability on the right flank, Mokwana never enjoyed a smooth rise.
Financial difficulties forced him to quit his sports science studies, but he continued pursuing his football dream. He began making a name for himself in the ABC Motsepe League with Gemsbok Classic before earning a move to National First Division side Platinum City Rovers.
His performances at Platinum City Rovers attracted attention from top-flight clubs. During the 2021/22 season, he made 22 appearances and scored three goals, paving the way for a major breakthrough.
In May 2022, Mokwana signed a three-year contract with Sekhukhune United. He quickly adapted to the demands of the Betway Premiership, becoming a regular starter and an important attacking player. Across two productive seasons, he made more than 50 league appearances, contributed goals and assists, and earned several Player of the Match awards.
His club performances also opened the door to international football. Mokwana received his first Bafana Bafana call-up in November 2023 and went on to be part of the South African squad that claimed bronze at the Africa Cup of Nations. He also scored important goals in international matches against Andorra and Congo.
In August 2024, Mokwana took the next step in his career by joining Tunisian giants Espérance de Tunis on a three-year deal. He made an immediate impact, becoming the first South African player to win the Tunisian Ligue Professionnelle 1 title.
His debut season in Tunisia proved highly successful. He featured in more than 30 matches across all competitions, including the CAF Champions League, and helped Espérance secure a domestic treble consisting of the league title, Tunisian Cup and Tunisian Super Cup.
Mokwana then moved to the Saudi Pro League in August 2025, joining Al-Hazem on a season-long loan. He became an important part of the team, making 24 appearances and 16 starts. The winger also opened his scoring account in the Gulf region with a memorable individual goal against Al-Taawoun.
