UEFA Set To Punish PSG After Barcelona Moan Over Controversial Banner
PSG set to face UEFA punishment

Paris Saint-Germain could face disciplinary action from UEFA after Barcelona lodged a formal complaint over an offensive banner displayed by supporters of the French club during Tuesday’s Champions League encounter.

The controversial display was unveiled by PSG ultras at the Parc des Princes before the hosts secured a 4-2 victory over Hansi Flick’s side.

According to Barca Universal, citing Spanish outlet AS, Barcelona were unhappy with the imagery used by PSG supporters and decided to bring the incident to UEFA’s attention.

The banner depicted a masked figure wearing a PSG shirt and wielding a blood-covered chainsaw, which appeared to be cutting through Barcelona’s crest.

It also carried the French inscription “Massacre à la parisienne,” translated as “A Parisian-style massacre.”

Inspiration Behind The Banner

The tifo was reportedly inspired by the 1974 horror film The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Barcelona considered the display inappropriate and subsequently reported the incident to UEFA’s match delegate.

The Catalan giants were also unhappy with offensive chants directed at their club by sections of the PSG supporters.

Some fans reportedly displayed smaller banners carrying insulting messages, while flares were also ignited during the encounter.

Barca Denounce The Banner Display

Barcelona condemned the incidents, insisting that such behaviour had no place in football.

In a statement reported by Anadolu Agency, the club said: “These images were deeply disturbing and conveyed a message that incites violence and hatred in sport.”

Barcelona maintained that football rivalries should be conducted with respect and sportsmanship rather than provocative imagery or abusive language.

The complaint could now leave PSG facing disciplinary measures under UEFA’s regulations governing supporter conduct.

Article 16 of UEFA’s disciplinary regulations prohibits the use of gestures, words, objects or other means to communicate provocative messages considered inappropriate for sporting events.

A first offence involving such conduct can attract a standard fine of €10,000.

However, any punishment would depend on UEFA’s assessment of the incident and whether the governing body decides to pursue disciplinary proceedings.

The controversy, however, did not overshadow PSG’s impressive performance against Barcelona, which saw the reigning European champions maintain their perfect start to the Champions League campaign.

Luis Enrique’s side secured a 4-2 victory, condemning Barcelona to their first defeat of the season.

Despite the result, attention has shifted to events in the stands, with Barcelona determined to have the conduct of the home supporters examined.

UEFA has yet to announce any punishment against PSG over the incident.
