Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has praised teenage sensation Shea Lacey for his impressive contribution to the Red Devils’ thrilling 3-2 comeback victory over Roma in the Champions League.
The 19-year-old came off the bench to provide the assist for Matheus Cunha’s winning goal as United overturned a two-goal deficit at Old Trafford on Tuesday.
According to GOAL, Carrick was particularly impressed with Lacey’s creativity and defensive commitment, describing the youngster as a player with a mischievous side to his game.
United had endured a disastrous opening against the Italian side, conceding twice inside 17 minutes through Matias Soule and Donyell Malen.
However, Bruno Fernandes sparked the comeback with a second-half penalty before Cunha struck twice in quick succession to complete a remarkable turnaround.
Lacey, who replaced Amad Diallo in the 75th minute, played a decisive role in the winning goal, finding Cunha with a pass that allowed the Brazilian to fire home at the near post.
Speaking after the encounter, Carrick expressed his delight with the academy graduate’s performance.
“Not going too over the top, but at the same time absolutely delighted for Shea,” Carrick said.
“We love him to bits. He’s a great young man, he’s desperate to do well, he’s got great ability. So in terms of coming inside and finding the pass, that’s not surprising. He’s got that little glint in his eye, he plays with a bit of mischief, if you like, so he’s always looking to have that.
“But I was just as happy seeing him defending as a right-back when we needed that in the moments when as a rounded footballer, you’ve got to be able to do that. So I was just as pleased seeing him do that in the defensive side, and seeing younger players take the opportunity.
“I think he gave everybody a bit of a lift coming on the pitch, and it was fantastic to see, and he made the most of what he had tonight.”
The victory ended Manchester United’s nine-match winless run and provided a much-needed boost for Carrick’s side following a difficult period.
However, Cunha’s suspension means United will have to cope without their match-winner in their next Champions League fixture.
