Ghana’s Black Maidens have booked their place in the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after defeating Argentina 5-4 on penalties following a 1-1 draw in regulation time on Wednesday.
The result represents a significant milestone for Ghana, who are making their seventh appearance at the tournament and have reached the last eight for the first time since 2018.
The Black Maidens made a bright start to the encounter and took the lead in the 16th minute through Jessica Appiah, who finished off a pass from Obinsrewuo.
Ghana maintained their advantage until the break but missed several opportunities to increase their lead in the second half.
Goalkeeper Belinda Aklie was also instrumental in keeping the team ahead, making several important saves as Argentina pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
However, Ghana suffered a setback in the 77th minute when Hajara Adam was shown a second yellow card and sent off, leaving the team to finish the match with 10 players.
Argentina capitalised on their numerical advantage nine minutes later, with Mercedes Diz heading home in the 86th minute to bring her side level.
The goal was Diz’s seventh of the competition and ensured the contest went to a penalty shootout after neither team managed to find a winner before the end of regulation time.
Ghana kept their composure from the spot, converting enough penalties to secure a 5-4 victory and advance to the quarter-finals of the competition.
