Trey Nyoni interview: Liverpool's fighting attitude, his journey so far and Carabao Cup ambitions
Trey Nyoni - 27/10/2026

The Reds made it four consecutive victories by beating Brighton & Hove Albion 2-0 in the Premier League at Anfield on Sunday.

Midfielder Nyoni helped confirm that result as a second-half substitute against the Seagulls, having previously impressed as a starter in the 4-3 Champions League defeat of Villarreal.

Next on the agenda for Andoni Iraola’s men is a cup clash with Chelsea on home soil on Wednesday night, with a place in the quarter-finals at stake.

Involvement against the Blues would see Nyoni reach 10 appearances this term and overall take him to 30 games in his senior Liverpool career, which has already included a taste of success in the Carabao Cup.

Ahead of the tie, Liverpoolfc.com sat down with the 19-year-old at the AXA Training Centre. Read the interview below.

On the team being in a good moment and the morale within the squad…

Yeah, obviously it’s good. Everyone is positive right now. It was a tough game [against Brighton]. We knew we needed to win. Obviously keeping a clean sheet as well was quite important because in the last few games we’ve conceded a couple of goals. I think everyone’s positive right now and there’s just a real belief in the group.

Inside Anfield: Liverpool 2-0 Brighton | BEST behind-the-scenes from Premier League win!

On it being a positive few weeks for him personally and the feeling of getting more opportunities at senior level…

It’s positive. My motive has always just been like, whether I’m on the pitch for a minute, five minutes, 10 minutes, 90 minutes, I just try to make the most out of the minutes I get. But I think in the last few weeks obviously I’ve had a lot of exposure, which has been good for me. It’s something different, playing a lot of minutes within a short space of time, also adapting. But it has been really good, something that I’ve needed. It’s just good to be playing and obviously just taking in the experience as well, which is important.

On his important block just after coming on against Brighton and the fighting attitude being shown throughout the squad…

One hundred per cent. I’d just come on and we lost the ball – I was just thinking about trying to read the game as much as possible. I think in that scenario, obviously Ronald [Araujo] has tried to put everything on the line to block it but luckily I was there to block it. It hurt a lot. But I mean, that’s the point – if you want to win games, you want to keep clean sheets, if you want to be successful then these are the moments that you need as a team. It just shows the spirit. During the game as well, players putting their bodies on the line and fighting is what you need. It’s just as important as having quality as well going forward; defending is also a big part of it.

On Araujo’s recent performances and how impressive he has been…

Yeah, I think Ronald has kind of inspired everyone to fight. Coming from where he was, he was a captain, so that in itself already shows how much of a leader he is. And I think even though obviously at the minute he doesn’t speak much English, on the pitch you can see that he’s willing to fight and willing to give everything. When you see a player like that, I think it helps everyone else understand what it means to even just play here. So, I think it is important to have someone like him who’s got a lot of experience and can help everyone else.

On making his journey at Liverpool alongside the likes of Lewis Koumas, James McConnell and Rio Ngumoha…

Trey Nyoni - 27/10/2026

For sure, it’s been good. You look at James, he has been around the first team for a long time, even before I came here. So, he knows the level, he knows what it means to be around here. Mine and Lewis’ journeys have been quite similar, even though he’s been out on loan. My first year being here we were playing together – U18s, Youth Cup, U21s, and being in and around the first-team side. We’ve been quite close in that time. I’d like to mention Jayden [Danns] as well, he has also been part of that.

And then obviously Rio came in from Chelsea. For me, Rio is one of those people where when I came the year before, I kind of wanted someone to just make me feel welcome. For me, it was important that Rio had someone there, because we share a similar journey. Now, I’m not even surprised what he’s doing. I think what he is doing right now is exceptional.

For me, it’s positive to see the younger players, because obviously we need to stick together as one, help each other as much as possible. We know that obviously being here, it’s not easy, there’s a lot of world-class players here. They’re going to push us every day and I think having that just allows us to keep pushing on and keep progressing. Every time we go on the pitch, I think none of us are really nervous to show what we want to do. I think we all go out there and give 100 per cent. That’s what’s important.

On the influence of senior players and the best advice he has received…

A lot of the senior players here have been really, really good. They help us a lot. They create a good environment for us as well. I think obviously as young players, you want players, especially senior players, that are professional and do the right thing. All of them are that. I look at Virgil [van Dijk], Ali [Alisson Becker], who have won a lot at this club and know what it actually means to play here. Those two for sure help us a lot, especially on the pitch with communication and everything they do.

Obviously Mo [Salah] and Robbo [Andy Robertson] are not here now, but they were a big part for me especially. They helped me a lot and advised me a lot off the pitch and just tried to be there for me. On the outside looking in, sometimes it looks difficult, when I’m not playing and this and that. But just the advice and being in training every day has helped me a lot the last few years to be able to be in this position I’m in now. Having those players there, they helped me a lot.

On the challenge he expects from Chelsea on Wednesday night…

We know it’s going to be a tough game. The last round wasn’t an easy game either against Spurs, a good side who just beat Chelsea now. We know that this competition is never easy to win, it’s not an easy thing to do. We just have to be focused and try to use the home advantage to help us win.

On having been part of the Reds squad that won the trophy in 2024 and it making him want more…

Yeah, 100 per cent. Being around there at that point, it showed what it really means to win at this club. The atmosphere that day was really, really good. It’s something I’d never experienced before. Not just the fact that we won but because a lot of younger players were involved on the day, I think it made it even more special. And for sure it showed me what it means to win it.
