CAS ruling on Senegal AFCON title appeal expected end of November

The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) says it will issue its ruling on Senegal’s appeal against being stripped of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations title at the end of November.

CAS said its full award, including legal grounds, is now expected at the end of November 2026.

The case relates to the final in Rabat in January, when Senegal beat hosts Morocco 1-0 after extra time. Late in regulation time, a penalty was awarded to Morocco. Senegal walked off the pitch in protest, with several players returning to the dressing room. Play resumed after about 14 minutes. Morocco missed the penalty, and Senegal scored the winner in extra time.

Two months later, the Confederation of African Football (CAF) Appeal Board ruled that Senegal had forfeited the match by walking off and overturned the result, recording it as a 3-0 win for Morocco and awarding the title to Morocco. Senegal is challenging that decision and has said it will not return the trophy and gold medals.

Senegal lodged its appeal to CAS on 25 March. The arguments of Senegal, Morocco and CAF were heard in Lausanne on 8 October.

At the time, CAS indicated a decision would follow within days but has since said it will issue a complete award.

“This process will require several weeks, with the CAS Award expected at the end of November 2026,” CAS said in a statement.

CAS Director General Matthieu Reeb said outside the hearing earlier this month that the facts of the case were clear and discussions would focus on procedural and legal issues.

The panel is chaired by French sports law expert Gerald Simon, assisted by Italian international law professor Luigi Fumagalli and Hamburg-based attorney and law professor at the University of Zurich Ulrich Haas.

CAS awards have the same value as a national court judgment and are enforceable under the New York Convention on the Recognition and Enforcement of Foreign Arbitral Awards.
