Steven Gerrard has expressed his support for Trent Alexander-Arnold returning to Liverpool, although he questioned whether a reunion would benefit the club currently.
The former Reds captain believes the England international possesses the quality to strengthen Liverpool’s squad despite struggling for regular opportunities at Real Madrid.
Alexander-Arnold left Anfield in 2025 to join the Spanish giants but has reportedly struggled to establish himself as a regular starter.
Recent reports suggest Liverpool are exploring a possible January loan move, although Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho is reluctant to approve his departure.
Speaking on The Overlap, as reported by Madrid Universal, Gerrard was asked whether Liverpool should consider bringing their former academy graduate back to Anfield.
“Take Trent back at Liverpool?
“Yes, I would. Ability and talent-wise, he makes the squad better, 100%.
“His decision, the ending, it was a bit raw. It’s tough. I’m unsure if it’s right for Liverpool, the manager and fans right now,” said Gerrard.
Alexander-Arnold’s limited opportunities in Spain have increased speculation about a possible return to English football.
Real Madrid have strengthened their right-back options with the arrival of Netherlands international Denzel Dumfries.
However, Federico Valverde has featured in the position recently, leaving Alexander-Arnold facing further uncertainty over his playing time.
Liverpool are reportedly monitoring the situation ahead of January, but Mourinho is unwilling to lose players midway through the campaign.
Consequently, any potential return remains complicated, despite Gerrard’s belief that the defender would improve Liverpool’s squad.
