Martinez back in Chelsea training and targeting Sunderland return

Chelsea goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has returned to training after recovering from the jaw fracture he suffered in an October Premier League match.

The Argentina international completed a training session and is hoping to feature against Sunderland in Chelsea’s next fixture, according to Daily Mail journalist Kieran Gill.

Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso is expected to provide greater clarity on Martinez’s fitness in the coming days. If the 34-year-old is available, Alonso will have to decide whether to select him or Mike Penders.

Martinez sustained the injury during Chelsea’s 2-0 victory over Everton on 17 October. He fractured his jaw after colliding with an opposition player and subsequently underwent surgery.

Sunderland host Chelsea on 8 November in the 10th round of the Premier League.
