Luis Enrique sparks doubts over PSG academy pathways

Paris Saint-Germain secured the transfer of 18-year-old Spanish midfielder Dro from Barcelona for €8.2 million during the winter transfer window, according to a report by SPORT. The young player chose to move to Paris primarily driven by the opportunity to work under manager Luis Enrique, highlighting the French club’s drawing power among elite prospects. This acquisition served as a clear demonstration of the Parisian side’s ability to attract players embarking on their elite careers, snatching one of Barcelona’s standout homegrown talents.

Luis Enrique and the Pursuit of Young Talent

Manager Luis Enrique has reshaped how Paris Saint-Germain identifies and integrates young players since his arrival. Beyond restructuring the first team, the Asturian coach pushed the club to target elite youth talent across Europe rather than relying solely on senior market acquisitions. This recruitment strategy led officials to pursue 17-year-old Adil Hamdani from Olympique de Lyon and 16-year-old Montpellier forward Laciné Megnan-Pavé during the summer transfer window, though those specific deals did not materialize. Ultimately, neither operation reached a successful conclusion, but the club has not thrown in the towel and will try again in future transfer windows.

The club maintains its aggressive stance on youth recruitment despite housing one of France’s most prominent academies. In November 2024, Paris Saint-Germain opened a state-of-the-art sports complex designed to unify playing styles across all youth categories and ease the transition to the professional squad, drawing inspiration from Barcelona’s La Masia model.

Academy Pathways and First-Team Realities

The influx of external youth signings has generated friction within the club’s academy ranks. According to sports daily L’Équipe, the club’s transfer policy has sparked doubts among representatives of homegrown players regarding genuine pathways to the senior squad. Agents question whether academy standouts can secure regular playing time under Luis Enrique when the club continually imports external teenagers.

This competitive logjam has prompted several high-profile academy departures in recent seasons. Players such as Joane Gadou, Ethan Mbappé, Oumar Camara, and Emmanuel Mbemba chose to leave Paris for regular playing opportunities elsewhere. Gadou currently plays as a starter for Borussia Dortmund, Ethan Mbappé continues his development at Lille, Camara established himself in Portugal, and Mbemba secured a permanent role with Paris FC.
