Golden Eaglets miss out on WAFU B U-17 Best XI
Golden Eaglets miss out on WAFU B U-17 Best XI

Nigeria’s Golden Eaglets have failed to secure a place in the Best XI of the 2026 WAFU B U-17 AFCON Qualifying Tournament held in Burkina Faso, following the unveiling of the competition’s outstanding players.

The Technical Study Group (TSG) of the tournament announced the Team of the Tournament, with champions Niger and runners-up Côte d’Ivoire dominating the selection.

Players from host nation Burkina Faso, Ghana and Benin also earned places in the Best XI after impressing during the regional competition.

However, Nigeria were conspicuously absent from the selection, with none of the Golden Eaglets players making the final list.

Niger and Côte d’Ivoire dominate selection

Niger and Côte d’Ivoire accounted for the majority of the players selected in the Team of the Tournament, reflecting their performances during the competition.

Niger emerged as champions of the regional tournament, while Côte d’Ivoire finished as runners-up after progressing through the competition.

The two countries’ strong representation in the Best XI further highlighted their influence on the tournament, with players from both sides earning individual recognition for their contributions.

Other participating countries, including Burkina Faso, Ghana and Benin, also had players recognised in the selection.

Niger coach wins Best Coach award

Niger’s impressive campaign received further recognition as the country’s head coach was named Best Coach of the Tournament.

The award followed Niger’s successful run to the title, which saw the team finish ahead of their regional rivals.

The recognition also underscored the country’s overall performance, with its players featuring prominently in the individual honours.

Setback for Golden Eaglets

For Nigeria, the absence of any player from the Best XI represents a disappointing outcome, particularly given the country’s reputation in youth football.

The Golden Eaglets were unable to secure individual recognition among the players considered outstanding during the competition.

The selection by the Technical Study Group provides an assessment of the players who made significant contributions to their respective teams throughout the tournament.

With Niger and Côte d’Ivoire dominating the honours, the outcome highlights the performances of the two finalists in the 2026 WAFU B U-17 AFCON qualifying competition.
