Football fans were left fuming with Sky Sports after the broadcaster made an unusual change during Liverpool's Carabao Cup clash with Chelsea on Wednesday night. The two Premier League sides were meeting in the fourth round of the competition at Anfield, but it was the fans watching from home who were left scratching their heads.
That's because Sky were offering fans updates on Rangers' Scottish Premiership clash with Hearts while the action was ongoing in the Liverpool vs Chelsea match. Even though both matches were being shown on Sky channels, it was an unusual departure from the normal broadcasting experience.
Anytime there was a goal in the match, it would pop up in the corner of the screen, with the commentators giving extra details. They also did it for the other Carabao Cup matches, but it was the Scottish updates people were unhappy about.
@LFCJacobb wrote on X: "Sorry but there is no reason for goals from the Scottish prem blocking my screen. The other league cup games fair enough, but who ******* cares?"
@Stanleysonson said: "Missed another Liverpool attack as @SkySports blocking half the screen showing me a Scottish goal. Why do they think anyone wants this?"
A confused @Blaynos14 remarked: "Why are Sky showing Scottish football highlights during Liverpool v Chelsea?"
While @SheepMma asked a similar question, saying: Why are Sky showing rangers highlights during a Liverpool v Chelsea game?"
As far as the action went, the first half was a tale of two penalties. Chelsea took the lead from the spot midway through the first half when Morgan Rogers converted from 12 yards, but the hosts would be level at the break after Cody Gakpo scored a penalty of their own.
The two sides couldn't be separated in the second half, but in keeping with the theme of the night, it was a penalty shootout that decided the match. Chelsea had the chance to win it when Ryan Gravenberch missed from 12 yards, but debutant Emanuel Emegha fluffed his lines.
A goal from Joe Gomez put the Reds back in control, with Wesley Fofana guilty of missing the crucial penalty. It's another positive result for Andoni Iraola's Liverpool, who haven't missed a beat since losing to Manchester City earlier this month.
They welcome champions Arsenal to Anfield on Sunday as they look to make it six wins in a row across all competitions. Meanwhile, Chelsea host under-pressure Manchester United in Saturday's early kick-off.
