Galatasaray secured their first victory of the UEFA Champions League campaign on Wednesday night after delivering an impressive comeback to defeat Lille on their home turf in northern France.
Nigeria international Victor Osimhen was among the goalscorers, sealing the Turkish side’s victory with his first Champions League goal since February against his former club.
Determined to recover from their 4-1 home defeat to Barcelona last week, Galatasaray made a flying start, taking the lead after just 66 seconds.
Yunus Akgun capitalised on a poor defensive header from Lille defender Alexsandro before firing the ball high into the net.
Lille responded quickly, restoring parity in the seventh minute through teenage winger Soriba Diaoune.
The youngster displayed excellent composure as he ran on to Alexsandro’s through-ball, rounded Galatasaray goalkeeper Ugurcan Cakir and calmly slotted into an empty net.
Galatasaray were handed a potential opportunity to regain the lead midway through the first half when goalkeeper Berke Ozer appeared to bring down Osimhen inside the penalty area.
However, a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review determined that the goalkeeper had won the ball, and the penalty decision was overturned.
Diaoune, who featured in Lille’s UEFA Youth League opening fixture last month, continued his impressive performance by scoring his second goal of the evening in the 39th minute.
The 19-year-old reacted quickly to a rebound following a save to put the French side ahead.
However, Lille’s defensive lapses proved costly once again, as Galatasaray equalised just before half-time.
Roland Sallai delivered an excellent cross into the box, allowing an unmarked Aleksey Batrakov to head home and restore parity.
The visitors regained the advantage seven minutes into the second half when Lucas Torreira met a corner with a header at the near post.
Lille goalkeeper Ozer got a touch on the ball but was unable to prevent it from crossing the line. Osimhen then delivered the decisive blow shortly after the hour mark, finishing off a swift counter-attack to extend Galatasaray’s lead and punish his former employers.
The victory gives Galatasaray a much-needed boost as they prepare to host Stuttgart on Tuesday, 3 November, at 17:45 GMT, hoping to build on their first Champions League win of the season.
Meanwhile, Lille will travel to Norway to face Bodo/Glimt later that evening at 20:00 GMT as they search for their first points in the competition.
The French side will be particularly concerned after losing both of their Champions League home matches this season despite taking the lead in each encounter.
