Chukwueze Hip Blow: AC Milan Winger Out for Weeks

Samuel Chukwueze is facing an extended spell on the sidelines after suffering a left hip injury that struck during AC Milan’s 3-2 Serie A victory over Atalanta on October 18, 2026. The Nigeria international felt discomfort in the closing stages of that match and was later substituted, with the problem escalating enough to force him out of training ahead of the club’s UEFA Europa League trip to Bournemouth.

Milan’s medical staff confirmed the setback after specialist consultation. Chukwueze began a course of injection therapy, with a follow-up assessment scheduled 10 to 15 days later (around early November).

Italian reports, including Corriere della Sera, indicate the layoff is expected to last at least two months, meaning a return is unlikely before the end of 2026.

The timing has already cost the Rossoneri dearly. Chukwueze missed the 3-0 Europa League defeat at Bournemouth on October 22, the Serie A win at Udinese on October 25, the home loss to Bologna on October 28, and the high-stakes Milan derby against Inter on October 31.

That adds up to four competitive matches missed so far. Further absences look certain for the Europa League home clash with Ferencváros on November 5 and the Serie A trip to Genoa on November 8.

Looking ahead, the Super Eagles star is also set to miss Nigeria’s crucial AFCON 2027 qualifying double-header against Tanzania on November 13 (home in Uyo) and November 17 (away).

Big club fixtures further down the line that remain at risk include the Europa League away game at Olympiacos in late November and the tough Serie A trip to Napoli in mid-December, depending on how rehabilitation progresses.

Progress remains cautious. The club statement noted that the injection therapy is underway and that the next medical check will determine whether further intervention, potentially including surgery if the response is poor, becomes necessary.

No accelerated return timeline has been announced, and sources close to the situation stress that a full recovery by year-end is the realistic target rather than a rapid comeback.

The injury compounds Milan’s right-flank shortage. Alexis Saelemaekers is already ruled out long-term after ankle surgery, leaving manager Rúben Amorim short of natural width and creativity on that side.

Chukwueze had featured in eight appearances across all competitions this season, contributing two assists, and had become a regular option in Amorim’s system following his return from a Fulham loan.

For both club and country the absence is a significant blow. AC Milan must navigate a congested November schedule without one of their more dynamic attackers, while the Super Eagles lose a key creative outlet at a pivotal moment in qualifying.

Fans and medical staff will now closely monitor the upcoming reassessment for any positive signs of progress in the weeks ahead.
