Real Madrid have been handed a fresh injury concern after captain Federico Valverde played through muscular discomfort during Sunday’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona in El Clásico.
The Uruguay international is expected to undergo medical examinations on Tuesday to determine the extent of the problem and whether he faces a spell on the sidelines.
According to Madrid Universal, citing MARCA, Valverde first experienced discomfort during the opening half at Spotify Camp Nou but continued playing before eventually being substituted in the second half.
His decision to remain on the pitch despite the problem has raised concerns that he could have aggravated the injury.
Valverde’s fitness will be particularly important to Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho, who has increasingly relied on the midfielder at right-back.
Although the 28-year-old has traditionally operated in midfield, he has impressed in his new defensive role, offering Madrid greater balance with his energy, defensive awareness and ability to support attacks.
His performances have contributed to the team’s recent improvement, making the prospect of losing him a major concern for Mourinho.
Speaking after the victory over Barcelona, the Portuguese tactician singled out Valverde for praise, revealing the extent of the captain’s determination to help his teammates.
“There is another name I didn’t want to leave unmentioned, and that is Valverde, for playing injured for more than 40 minutes,” Mourinho said.
“He got injured, wanted to carry on and push himself to his limits, and gave everything while he was on the pitch.”
Valverde’s willingness to continue underlined his commitment during a fiercely contested encounter, although Madrid will now be hoping his decision has not worsened the problem.
An extended absence could force Mourinho to reconsider his options at right-back, where the Uruguayan has become an increasingly influential figure.
