Gor Mahia maintain perfect start as Migori Youth, Mathare United share spoils

Gor Mahia maintained their perfect start to the SportPesa Premier League season with a 1-0 victory over Bandari at Nyayo Stadium this afternoon.

Captain Alpha Onyango scored the decisive goal in the 67th minute to secure maximum points for the defending champions, who have three wins from three matches.

Enock Machaka nearly doubled the lead in the 82nd minute after rounding the goalkeeper, but his effort rattled the crossbar. The victory took Gor Mahia to nine points to stay top of the standings.

At Awendo Green Stadium in Migori county, hosts Migori Youth held Mathare United to a goalless draw in a match disrupted by heavy rainfall. The fixture was briefly halted in the 14th minute due to a downpour but resumed later despite the poor condition of the playing surface.

Migori Youth created several chances, with Dennis Oguta coming close in the 28th minute before testing Mathare goalkeeper Kevin Ouru again in the 39th. Elly Owande also forced a save from Ouru with a powerful effort from outside the box in the 32nd minute.

Migori Youth came closest to breaking the deadlock in the 80th minute when Philemon Nyakwaka’s header struck the post. Ouru’s impressive display earned him the Man of the Match award.

Meanwhile, Ulinzi Stars and Mara Sugar shared the points after another goalless encounter at SportPesa Arena. Mara Sugar threatened early, with Kepha Ondati seeing his effort blocked in the 16th minute after being set up by Alex Imbusia.

Ulinzi goalkeeper Ricks Omondi produced crucial saves to deny Godrick Vincent just before half-time and Victor Ngume shortly after the restart.

Ulinzi also came close to snatching the winner in the 67th minute, but Mara Sugar defender Drona Langa made a vital goal-line clearance to preserve the stalemate.

The actions continues on Sunday with 3K FC taking on Murang’a Seal, Nairobi United face APS Bomet, Mombasa United battle Kenya Police, while AFC Leopards face Shabana in the standout fixture of the day.
