Barcelona Suffer Fresh Injury Blow As Flick Rules Out Defender Until 2027

Barcelona manager Hansi Flick has revealed that young defender Xavi Espart may not return to action until early 2027 following the ankle injury he sustained against Real Madrid.

The 19-year-old was initially expected to recover before the end of December, but the latest update suggests he could spend longer on the sidelines than originally anticipated.

According to Barca Universal, Espart suffered a syndesmosis injury to his right ankle during Barcelona’s 2-1 El Clásico defeat to Real Madrid at the Spotify Camp Nou on October 25.

The versatile defender sustained the injury following a challenge involving Real Madrid midfielder Aurelien Tchouameni and was subsequently replaced by Alejandro Balde.

Barcelona confirmed on October 26 that Espart would be unavailable for approximately seven weeks, raising hopes that he could return before the end of the year.

However, Flick has now indicated that the youngster’s recovery could extend into January.

Speaking ahead of Barcelona’s Champions League encounter with Aston Villa, the German tactician also provided updates on other injured defenders.

What Flick Said

“We have four injured players: Xavi Espart, Eric, Christensen and Kounde. Xavi might return at the start of 2027. Others are likely to return after the int’l break.

“It’s not easy to manage, but Frenkie is there, coming back from injury and willing to help, just like Brian Farinas,” Flick said.

The development leaves Barcelona facing further defensive challenges, with Eric Garcia, Andreas Christensen and Jules Kounde also currently unavailable.

However, unlike Espart, the trio are expected to return after the upcoming international break, potentially easing Flick’s selection concerns.y

Espart’s absence represents another setback for the Catalan giants, particularly given his ability to operate on either flank of the defence.

The youngster had established himself as a useful option under Flick, contributing two goals and two assists in nine appearances across all competitions before sustaining the injury.

His versatility has allowed the Barcelona manager to make tactical adjustments, especially when dealing with injuries and fixture congestion.
