Alejandro Balde appears increasingly likely to leave Barcelona in the January transfer window after another setback under manager Hansi Flick.
The Spain international was strongly linked with a move away from the defending LaLiga champions during the summer, with concerns that a series of injuries had left him unable to regain his place in the starting XI.
His prospects have since worsened. Barcelona’s decision to sign Joao Cancelo on a permanent deal, combined with Gerard Martin’s dependable performances as cover at full-back, has further reduced Balde’s involvement.
Balde is yet to start a match this season, while Flick has previously told the defender that he must do more to force his way back into contention.
The emergence of Xavi Espart has added to the competition for places. Espart has moved ahead of Balde after making a rapid rise through La Masia, Barcelona’s academy.
Flick admitted before the club’s 6-1 win over Alaves at the weekend that Balde “lacked the conviction” required to earn a start, despite Espart being unavailable through injury.
The manager’s latest selection decision may now prove decisive. Flick chose midfielder Brian Farinas to play at right-back, rather than turning to Balde, in what appears to be the clearest indication yet that the defender has fallen down the pecking order.
A departure at the beginning of 2027 is now looking almost certain for Balde.
