Back from the dead? GFL announces first event on Dec. 18 in Argentina

Somebody check Global Fight League for a pulse.

After several failed launches, canceled events, financial problems and more comeback announcements than the average retired fighter, Global Fight League (GFL) claims it will finally stage its inaugural mixed martial arts (MMA) event on Fri., Dec. 18, 2026, inside Microestadio Club Atletico Lanús in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

Yes, GFL has announced its debut. Again.

“The wait is over. The Global Fight League is here,” the promotion wrote on social media. “A new era in MMA begins December 18 in Buenos Aires, Argentina.”

That is certainly one way to describe it.

Sticking with its team-based format, the debut event will feature the Miami Monsters traveling south to battle the newly formed Buenos Aires Gauchos. Complete rosters and individual matchups have yet to be revealed, although former UFC title challenger Marlon Moraes has been attached to Miami.

Moraes recently returned from retirement and snapped a seven-fight losing streak with a unanimous decision victory over Maximiliano Perez in August.

For those who understandably deleted GFL from their memories, the promotion originally planned to debut with back-to-back events in May 2025. Its star-studded opening weekend was supposed to feature Urijah Faber vs. Renan Barao 3, Anthony Pettis vs. Benson Henderson 3, Tony Ferguson vs. Dillon Danis and several other fights nobody expected to see in 2025.

They didn’t.

The entire launch collapsed after GFL’s promised funding disappeared. The promotion had advertised a fighter-friendly business model that included a 50-50 revenue split, health benefits and retirement plans. Unfortunately, revenue sharing becomes difficult when there are no events — or revenue.

GFL then rose from the grave earlier this year and announced another inaugural event for Oct. 17, 2026, inside Sam’s Town Live in Las Vegas, Nevada. That announcement was eventually scrubbed from social media, and Oct. 17 came and went without a punch being thrown.

Four days later, GFL proudly announced that Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) had approved it to hold an event in Las Vegas sometime in 2027. Now, despite being unable to hold its October card in Nevada, the promotion believes it can travel nearly 6,000 miles and launch in Argentina two months later.

Maybe the third time really is the charm.

Additional details regarding the Dec. 18 event — including the complete fight card, broadcast information and start time — are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.

Until a cage is assembled and two fighters are actually locked inside it, GFL remains undefeated at announcing events and winless at holding them.
