FC Bayern Munich and head of scouting Nils Schmadtke will part ways amicably, with Schmadtke leaving the German record champions on January 31, 2027, SPORT1 reported. The club announced on a Monday evening that both parties agreed to an early termination of the employment contract following trusting discussions. Schmadtke, the son of former Bundesliga goalkeeper Jörg Schmadtke, originally held a contract running through the summer of 2027. SPORT1 had previously reported in August on the impending departure of the 37-year-old.
The parting of ways does not come entirely out of nowhere. SPORT1 reported that internal criticism regarding the scouting department’s work surfaced as early as the spring, fueled by a sharp allegation: specific decision-makers within the club blamed the scouting unit for persistent leaks regarding internal personnel planning. Furthermore, oe24 noted that criticism also focused on interpersonal interactions with staff and subordinates, with internal evaluations occasionally labeling Schmadtke’s personal demeanor as “borderline.” These internal team dissonances ultimately prompted the decision to dissolve the partnership early to prevent further unrest within the club, according to oe24.

Schmadtke took over as head of scouting for the professional team and the FC Bayern Campus in October 2024, stepping into a role overseeing talent evaluation and roster planning for both the Bundesliga squad and the youth academy. His appointment linked him closely with Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl, as the two men share a history from their time together at Borussia Mönchengladbach, where Schmadtke assumed a sporting director role a year after Eberl’s departure, according to SPORT1 and Ligaportal. N-tv.de reported that Schmadtke’s exit marks the latest departure of an Eberl ally following the April exit of Markus Weinzierl, the former Augsburg coach who served as sporting director of the Bayern campus.
Despite the friction, club leadership offered public praise for Schmadtke’s two-year tenure. Max Eberl stated that Schmadtke provided substantial support in licensing squad planning and shaped the department with numerous new ideas, thanking him for his very great work and wishing him the best for the future, as detailed by SPORT1 and Ligaportal. Schmadtke reflected on his time by calling it a special task and a great honor, expressing pride in restructuring the scouting network for both the professionals and campus talents while thanking his team for their expertise and collaboration, per n-tv.de and oe24.
Regarding what comes next, the double-winners made no initial statements on a successor, according to Ligaportal. N-tv.de noted that while the kicker publication reported no clear candidate has emerged yet, Sky reported that Christopher Vivell is a possible candidate. Vivell currently serves as technical director at Premier League side Manchester United and possesses a Red Bull background from stints at RB Salzburg and RB Leipzig, though it remains unclear whether the English club would permit him to leave, according to n-tv.de.
Schmadtke will leave his position as head of scouting on January 31, 2027, following an agreed-upon early termination of his contract, which was originally scheduled to run through the summer of 2027, as reported by SPORT1.
Beginning in October 2024, Schmadtke served as head of scouting, overseeing talent identification and squad planning for both the professional licensing team and the youth development setup at the FC Bayern Campus, according to Ligaportal and oe24.
FC Bayern has not announced an official successor, though media reports from outlets such as n-tv.de and Sky have linked Manchester United technical director Christopher Vivell to the vacancy due to his previous Red Bull organizational experience.
