Rangers, El-Kanemi Face Crucial CAF Return Legs in North Africa

Nigerian clubs face major continental tests today, with Rangers International of Enugu heading to Algeria to protect a 2-0 CAF Champions League advantage over MC Alger. In Morocco, El-Kanemi Warriors of Maiduguri meet Raja Casablanca seeking a result that will preserve their CAF Confederation Cup campaign.

Both sides have challenging return fixtures ahead. Rangers travel with a useful cushion, while El-Kanemi need another determined display after their first-leg draw.

Quick facts

  • Rangers lead MC Alger 2-0 after the first leg in Abeokuta.
  • El-Kanemi Warriors drew 2-2 with Raja Casablanca in Ikenne.
  • Rangers arrived early in Algeria after travelling through Istanbul.
  • Raja have previously won the CAF Confederation Cup in 2018 and 2021.

Rangers secured their 2-0 first-leg victory over MC Alger on Sunday at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The Flying Antelopes had to show considerable resolve after goalkeeper Lucky Jimoh was dismissed in the 13th minute for fouling MC Alger striker Zakaria Naidji. Fidelis Ilechukwu’s team stayed compact despite being a man down and kept the Algerian side at bay.

MC Alger were reduced to 10 players as well in the 51st minute, when Oussama Benhaoua collected his second booking.

The contest looked set to finish scoreless until Kenneth Igboke struck from the penalty spot in the 84th minute. Replacement Emo James added the second goal three minutes later.

MC Alger must score at least twice to draw level across the two legs and will aim to make their home setting count.

Rangers general manager and chief executive Barrister Amobi Ezeaku believes his side can complete the job in Algiers.

“Nothing will trouble us. We are going to play them and beat them in Algiers,” Ezeaku said. “They can shout, make noise and jump around, but by God’s grace we will return to Nigeria happy. Amen.”

He added: “We have prepared thoroughly and understand their tactics. We are already here and feel at home.”

The Rangers party made the trip early, travelling through Istanbul to give the squad time to acclimatise before Friday’s game.

The opening match was followed by a dispute, with Rangers submitting a petition to the Confederation of African Football over the behaviour of some MC Alger supporters in Abeokuta.

The Enugu side claimed that certain visiting supporters broke seats inside the stadium and entered without purchasing tickets. Rangers also cited disorder in and around the fixture, calling for an inquiry and sanctions against anyone found culpable.

The club requested guarantees over the security of its players, officials and travelling party for the second leg. It also asked CAF to consider staging the game without fans.

CAF’s Disciplinary Committee conducted a virtual hearing on Thursday, although no decision had been issued at the time. Reports in Algeria said the match commissioner had filed a strongly critical report concerning MC Alger and some of their fans in Abeokuta, while ticket sales were reportedly halted pending the case.

However, no spectator restrictions were ultimately imposed for the decisive fixture.

Rangers coach Ilechukwu has warned his players not to become complacent despite their two-goal lead.

“We have to treat the second leg as if we are trailing by two goals,” Ilechukwu said.

An early strike from MC Alger could rapidly change the mood inside the stadium and place Rangers under intense pressure. A Rangers away goal, meanwhile, would leave the Algerians needing three goals.

Heartland FC technical manager Emmanuel Amuneke has sent his best wishes to Rangers, urging the players to remain united and not be cowed by their opponents. The former Nigeria international said bravery, focus and shared responsibility would be crucial.

Rangers also have a warning from their own past. In the 1976 semi-finals of the former African Cup of Champions Clubs, they won 2-0 against the Algerian side in Nigeria before losing 3-0 away and being eliminated.

The Enugu club reached this stage by defeating Benin Republic’s AS Sobemap 5-4 on penalties, after both matches ended 1-1. MC Alger advanced after a 5-0 aggregate success over ASN Nigelec of Niger Republic.

Elsewhere, El-Kanemi Warriors, known as the Borno Army, have a difficult trip to Morocco after drawing 2-2 with Raja Casablanca in the opening leg at Remo Stars Stadium in Ikenne.

El-Kanemi went ahead in the sixth minute, but Jordanian attacker Mohammad Abu Zrayq, better known as Sharara, restored parity in the 23rd minute. Nigerian-born forward Mathias Oyewusi put Raja in front in the 61st minute before El-Kanemi equalised again in the 82nd.

Raja ended the match with 10 men after Isaac Zidani was sent off late in the game.

The contest remains evenly poised, though Raja will have the benefit of playing the return encounter at home.

El-Kanemi must again display attacking ambition while maintaining defensive discipline against opponents with extensive experience in African competition. Raja, meanwhile, will be determined not to repeat the errors that allowed their first-leg lead to disappear.

The run has added importance for Maiduguri and Borno State. El-Kanemi booked their place in this round with a 3-1 aggregate triumph over Guinea-Bissau’s UDIB in the first preliminary phase, with Nnamdi Mejuobi scoring twice in the first match.

The Maiduguri club are also trying to recover following relegation from Nigeria’s top division.

Raja remain a powerful opponent, having lifted the CAF Confederation Cup twice, in 2018 and 2021.
