Michael Carrick will remain in charge of Manchester United for at least one more game after being granted an unexpected stay of execution. It seemed his position had become untenable following Sunday's defeat at the hands of Bournemouth, which marked United's eighth match without victory in all competitions. However, after a round of crisis talks were held on Monday, it emerged that Carrick would be given another chance to turn things around.
It's been reported that United chose to retain Carrick due to a lack of attractive options to replace him in the Old Trafford dugout.
Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann were believed to have been the standout candidates, with Antonio Conte considered an outsider for the role.
Carrick will be desperate for a return to winning ways when United travel south to face Chelsea in their next Premier League outing on Saturday.
It remains to be seen whether defeat in that fixture will bring the Red Devils back to square one or if Carrick would be given further opportunities to turn things around.
