Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has requested the signing of Real Madrid central defender Antonio Rüdiger for the summer 2027 transfer market, according to a report by Football Insider. The Spanish coach wants to add an experienced veteran to a Stamford Bridge backline composed primarily of younger players, targeting the 33-year-old German defender to provide leadership to compete in the Premier League.

Alonso Backs Rüdiger to Bolster Young Stamford Bridge Defense

Alonso previously managed the central defender during the player’s tenure in Madrid. Technical staff at Chelsea are comparing the potential move to their historic acquisition of Thiago Silva, prioritizing a proven defender who already understands English football and the strict demands of the club. Rüdiger previously played in London from 2017 to 2022, making 203 official appearances and winning four major trophies: the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League, UEFA Super Cup, and FA Cup. That prior stint in England is expected to minimize tactical adaptation periods under Alonso’s setup for the 2027–2028 campaign.

Real Madrid Restructures Defense While Rüdiger Nears Contract Expiry

At the Santiago Bernabéu, club directors have systematically rebuilt the center-back position by adding Dean Huijsen in 2025 and Ibrahima Konaté in 2026. Real Madrid also plans to repatriate youth academy product Jacobo Ramón from Italian club Como to complete the generational turnover in central defense. Under coach José Mourinho, Rüdiger is no longer an undisputed starter, though he has logged six appearances in the early stages of the 2026–2027 season and maintains significant influence within the dressing room. Having signed a one-year contract extension last summer, club officials do not plan to offer him another renewal, which will allow him to leave on a free transfer.

January Pre-Contract Talks Set the Stage for Summer Return

Club intermediaries from London are scheduled to maintain open consultations with the player’s representatives throughout January 2027, the legal window when the defender can sign a binding pre-contract. If both sides reach an agreement on wage demands, Chelsea will formalize the paperwork to complete Rüdiger’s return to Stamford Bridge following a five-season spell with Real Madrid. Xabi Alonso previously earned 114 caps for Spain and lifted six trophies during his own five-year playing career at Real Madrid, including the 100-point La Liga campaign and La Décima.
