Conte crashes and burns but Howe makes history - we predict Man Utd under 10 new managers

Manchester United are expected to turn to a new manager and we have looked at what could be in store under 10 of the candidates

Michael Carrick's days look numbered at Manchester United after Sunday's loss to Bournemouth. The former caretaker boss has only been in permanent charge since the summer, but a return of just one win from eight league games - and just two in all competitions - appears to have left his position untenable. Carrick is the seventh permanent manager to take over at Old Trafford since Sir Alex Ferguson walked away at the end of the 2012/13 season and United look further than ever from winning their first league title since Fergie's final campaign.

Attention is now turning towards what comes next. Do United opt for someone who knows the Premier League or a decorated boss who lacks that experience of English football. One thing's for certain, they can't say they haven't tried all kinds of different approaches over the last decade, none of which have brought the sustained success the club grew used to in the first 21 seasons of the Premier League. We've examined 10 different candidates and given our verdict on how they might fare in the hot seat.

Antonio Conte

SSC Napoli v Udinese Calcio - Serie A
We know the drill as far as Conte is concerned. Immediate motivation and success on the pitch, though this is relative - given the current misery, a bounce into the Europa League spots might be the limit this term. The issue with the Italian is the misery he often leaves behind and you have to decide whether that's worth the trade-off for immediate glory. He'll leave after exactly two years in charge, following Champions League qualification with an identical record to Carrick this season, with his final act seeing him launch a tirade at the expense of an unnamed member of the United hierarchy, which some fans will take his side on. Scott McTominay returns but immediately gets homesick for Naples despite being from Lancaster. (Image: Getty)

Julian Nagelsmann

FIFA World Cup 2026 - round of 32Germany v Paraguay
Nagelsmann joins with big ideas, which he quickly realises he doesn't have the backing to execute. A couple of players become unlikely standouts and he - against all odds - turns Diogo Dalot into a competent Luke Shaw heir on the left. Leaves after improving the side but recognising a title push is impossible without financial backing he isn't going to receive. (Image: Getty)

Unai Emery

Aston Villa FC v Manchester City - Premier League 2026/27
Emery thrives at United because his strength is in an area where he *can* change things quickly - winning cup competitions. He picks up the FA Cup in his first season and the Europa League in his second to deliver the ingredients for a rebuild and last longer than any post-Fergie manager so far before being panic-sacked by Sir Jim Ratcliffe and succeeding elsewhere. Cesc Fabregas

Como 1907 v US Sassuolo - Serie A 2026/27
Fabregas makes a flying start, delivering the kind of exciting football United fans have been crying out for and doing so while recognising the desire to give youth a chance. Arsenal and Chelsea fans wonder why they didn't pounce first. Then Barcelona have a vacancy and he jumps ship. (Image: Getty)

Fabian Hurzeler

Liverpool v Brighton & Hove Albion - Premier League 2026/27
Hurzeler makes a solid start, putting United in a position to build after being brave enough to cash in on Bruno Fernandes. He is then let down by a bizarre transfer window in his second summer, but the squad overhaul will leave United in much better shape, and he'll hang in there to see through for what is, by the club's recent standards, a massive four-year tenure.
