“Du kannst das Spiel verlieren, aber du musst Fußball spielen,” RB Leipzig coach Martín Demichelis told DAZN before kickoff at the Estadio Santiago Bernabéu, framing a match that ended in a 1:4 defeat for the German side against Real Madrid in the UEFA Champions League.
RB Leipzig fell 1:4 to Real Madrid in Madrid, extending their away-match losing streak across all competitions to five games. The sole exception on the road this season remains a 6:0 victory in the opening round of the German Cup against Trier. The latest loss in the Champions League leaves Leipzig with two defeats in the continental tournament, following an earlier 1:0 win over PSV Eindhoven.
The result arrived just days after a 1:6 collapse against FC Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Yet in the Spanish capital, the visiting side offered a starkly different initial posture against the reigning European heavyweights. “Ich gehe mit einem schlechten Gefühl aus diesem Spiel, weil es eine Niederlage ist, aber meine persönliche Meinung ist, dass die Mannschaft ein ganz anderes Bild gezeigt hat als noch gegen Bayern,” Demichelis told DAZN after the final whistle.
Despite early pressure from Real Madrid, Leipzig carved out the opening opportunities. Ridle Baku registered the first shot for the visitors in the 20th minute, before Rômulo tested Thibaut Courtois with a sharp turn and shot from 11 meters out that the Belgian goalkeeper pushed away from the bottom left corner. Christopher Nkunku later broke through the defensive line alone in the 40th minute, only for Courtois to block his effort with a trailing arm.

Real Madrid absorbed the pressure and broke the deadlock just before halftime. Federico Valverde delivered a low cross toward Arda Güler, whose deflected shot struck Leipzig goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoort before Bernardo Silva pounced on the loose ball to tap it over the line. Demichelis later argued his team did not deserve to trail at the interval.
The hosts doubled their lead shortly after the restart when Kylian Mbappé directed a header across the face of goal for Arda Güler to push into the net from close range in the 52nd minute. Mbappé added a third in the 83rd minute with a curling shot from the edge of the penalty area.
Leipzig continued to push forward despite the deficit. Substitute Tidiam Gomis pulled a goal back for the visitors in the 85th minute, narrowing the score to 1:3.
Any hopes of a late comeback were extinguished two minutes later by 19-year-old Yan Diomande. The forward, who transferred from Leipzig to Real Madrid in the summer for 125 million euros, entered the match in the 70th minute as a substitute for Vinicius Jr., and later met a cross from Diaz to strike a right-footed volley into the top corner in the 87th minute. Before kickoff, Diomande had greeted his former teammates with embraces, and afterward apologized following his goal against his former club.
The defeat leaves Leipzig to regroup quickly ahead of domestic competition. Demichelis emphasized that his squad must address defensive vulnerabilities after conceding multiple goals once again. RB Leipzig returns to action on Saturday with a domestic league fixture against Elversberg.
