Manchester United midfielder Youri Tielemans found himself substituted at halftime during a 0-3 home defeat to Bournemouth, capping a difficult start after arriving from Aston Villa last summer. Where the Belgian international a step higher seemed to make, his stay at The Red Devils is not to be called successful at the moment. The result left Manchester United winless in eight matches and sitting sixteenth in the Premier League table after eight rounds, according to regional reporting. Outlets including The National, The Sun, and GOAL awarded the Belgian international a 3 out of 10 for his performance.
Manager Michael Carrick deployed Tielemans behind the striker against Bournemouth while keeping club captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench for the entire match. Andy Mitten wrote in The National that Tielemans’s attempt to fill a major role in place of Fernandes had failed. The Guardian described him as “a lost boy among men,” while Football Insider noted that Tielemans covered just 6.4 kilometers, the lowest total among all starting outfield players.

Despite the current struggles, Tielemans defended manager Michael Carrick in interviews with TNT Sports and Viaplay. Tielemans stated that he joined the club partly because Carrick explicitly wanted him to help the team. He added that the playing group wants stability rather than sudden changes, noting that the squad needs to keep working hard to turn results around. The coach has confidence in the players and that is mutual, with the group not wanting major changes and hoping to thank him with good performances and victories. Carrick’s strength is that he does not show too many emotions, and the coach really does everything for the club and his players.
Tielemans does not want to lay the responsibility for the crisis exclusively on the trainer, noting that the manager does his work and the players must do their work too, as it works in both directions. The rest of the playing group also keeps confidence in the coach, and the squad wants no sudden changes or to have everything turned upside down to disturb the situation further. Tielemans understands the supporters’ frustration given very successful periods in the past, noting that the players are demanding of themselves and that supporters grow frustrated when results fall short just as the players do.
Former Manchester United players have offered sharply contrasting views on the Belgian’s arrival and fit within the squad. Wayne Rooney questioned Tielemans’s readiness following a 2-0 defeat to Hull City, suggesting the midfielder needed to realize he was no longer at Aston Villa. Later, following the acquisition of Carlos Baleba for 80 million euros including add-ons, Rooney expressed satisfaction with the increased competition for places.
Roy Keane offered a blunt assessment before and after the opening fixtures, stating on Stick to Football that while Tielemans is a good player, he will not carry Manchester United to the absolute top. Paul Scholes initially praised the signing as the engine room the team required, comparing him favorably to Éderson, but raised doubts within 24 hours about whether Tielemans and Kobbie Mainoo could function effectively as a midfield pair.
Gary Neville described Tielemans in July as an ideal signing to control the tempo of matches under Carrick, but revised that view after a 1-1 draw with Tottenham, telling Sky Sports that the midfield lacked the necessary dynamism for the Premier League. Rio Ferdinand, who initially praised the 40-million-euro transfer as a bargain, faced renewed attention over a podcast exchange.
Commentator Filip Joos, speaking on PlaySports during the broadcast of the Bournemouth match, noted that Manchester United has slipped below acceptable standards and that the malaise extends across all departments of the club. Bruno Fernandes faced criticism for publicly questioning his coach prior to the match, an action that preceded his benching against Bournemouth.
Tielemans acknowledged the frustration of supporters given the club’s history of success, but emphasized that the players share the responsibility for the poor run of form. Manchester United travels to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea on Saturday at 1:30 PM local time.
