The CIF Southern Section on Monday held five team division championships with 14 spots available for Thursday’s CIF-SS/SCGA team qualifier at Long Beach’s Skylinks Golf Course.

Three Inland teams — Orion International Academy, Ayala, and Diamond Bar — finished in the top 22 of the iWannamaker regular season ranking to earn sports in the Division 1 field.

Los Serranos Country Club’s North Course in Chino Hills hosted Monday’s Division 1 final and will be the site of the CIF State Southern California regional championship on Nov. 11.

Orion International Academy, an Ontario-based private school open since 2013 but in its first year of CIF-SS membership, was the lone Inland program to finish in the top 10 and advance automatically play Thursday. The Red Pandas finished tied for seventh with a team score of 385 (+15), led by junior Wendy He’s 2-under-par round of 72, which was good enough for eighth place individually.

What is even more remarkable about the accomplishment for Orion International Academy is only five golfers were available Monday. Six golfers usually play a tournament event with the highest score not counting to the final team total. So, the Red Pandas had no room for error.

Palomares League champ Ayala, playing on its home course, was in an advancing position for much of the day. However, the Bulldogs struggled down the stretch and finished 12th after shooting 393 (+23). Jessica Yue led the Bulldogs with a 75 (+1) after going out in 3 under par on her opening nine holes, including an eagle at the par-5 13th hole. Northwood was the final team to advance automatically after posting 390 (+20).

Ayala still has a path to Thursday’s CIF-SS/SCGA team championship, but the Bulldogs will need to have one of the next four lowest adjusted team handicaps to advance.

In Division 3, Beaumont’s Maleah Clark picked up her third individual win of the season at River Ridge Golf Club’s Victoria Lakes course in Oxnard by shooting a five-birdie and two-bogey round of 69 (-3). Clark is now 5 under par in 36 holes of postseason golf and 8 under par over her last 46 holes, dating back to the rain-shortened final round of Citrus Belt League tournament play October 22. Big VIII League team champion Roosevelt, behind a 79 (+7) from Amelia Chen, shot a team score of 430 (+70) and finished fifth.

At Bear Valley Country Club in Victorville, a pair of sophomores in Ramona’s Audrey Flores and Cobalt Institute’s Andrea Mendoza shot matching 77s (+5) in regulation to tie for first individually in Division 4. However, the first tiebreaker is back nine scores and Mendoza took home medalist honors on that basis (her 35 to Flores’ 37).

Meadowlark Golf Club in Huntington Beach served as host for the Division 2 championship, where Baseline League champion Los Osos finished fifth after shooting a team score of 407 (+52), finishing 12 shots behind champion Sage Hill. Baseline League individual champion Alexis Lee closed her Los Osos career with a round of even-par 71 to finish sixth individually. Also recording a top 10 finish for Los Osos was sophomore Tora Coggin, whose 1-over-par 72 was good for eighth.

Green River Golf Club in Chino Hills played host to the Division 5 team championship, where Centennial finished third after shooting 546 (+186). The Huskies finished 12 shots behind St. Lucy’s for a championship with two golfers finishing in the top 10 individually. Zara Ahmad closed her career with an 88 (+16) to finish fifth while Meghna Srinivasan’s 95 (+23) was good for eighth.

Twelve Inland golfers along with the Orion International Academy team will play Thursday seeking regional finals berths. Four teams and the top 28 individuals not on a qualified team will advance to the CIF State regional on Nov. 12.
