Julian Nagelsmann is 'liked' by Manchester United's director of recruitment, but his appointment as Michael Carrick's replacement is seen as 'unlikely', according to reports.
United chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox held talks over the future of Carrick on Monday morning following the club's 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth.
There is an air of uncertainty around the club's next move, with a host of high-profile names being linked with the job, including Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte and Julian Nagelsmann.
It is being widely reported that Wilcox prefers Premier League experience in the form of Howe, who performed miracles at Bournemouth before his arrival at Newcastle.
United's head of recruitment Christopher Vivell, meanwhile, is a big fan of former Germany manager Nagelsmann, having worked with the coach during his time at Bundesliga side RB Leipzig.
However, a report from The Athletic has suggested that people close to the club view Nagelsmann's appointment as 'unlikely' if Carrick were relieved of his duties.
Carrick arrived at Carrington on Monday afternoon and is believed to have attended United's under-21 clash against Hull City, which was a behind-closed-doors friendly.
The former midfielder is believed to have spent around three hours at the training ground.
Wilcox and Berrada, meanwhile, were also at Carrington and are believed to have held talks about Carrick's future, although question marks remain ahead of their Premier League clash against Chelsea on Saturday.
Asked if he expected to be sacked following United's defeat to Bournemouth, Carrick said he'd briefly spoken to Berrada and Wilcox after the full-time whistle.
“I totally understand the situation. I’m not expecting anything, in particular, to be honest. I’m carrying on as normal," he said.
“I love this place. I always do what I feel is going to be the best for the football club, whatever decision is made on anything. I’m not expecting anything.”
Carrick, who was appointed permanent head coach in May following a successful spell as interim, added: “Just briefly they (Omar Berrada and Jason Wilcox) came down like they always do after the game, but nothing out of the ordinary.”
As things stand, Carrick will be in the Stamford Bridge dugout when United face Chelsea on Saturday (October 31).
