Rennes vs Olympiakos Europa League Match Rescheduled to Nov 4 Due to French Strikes

The UEFA Europa League fixture between Stade Rennais and Olympiacos at Roazhon Park has been advanced to Wednesday, November 4, at 16:30 following security concerns raised by French authorities, Eurosport reported.

National Labor Strikes Overwhelm Local Police Capacity in Rennes

The schedule change stems from a nationwide inter-union call for general strikes and large-scale demonstrations across France on November 5. The prefectoral authorities in Ille-et-Vilaine informed Stade Rennais that all law enforcement officers will be mobilized to manage the social movement. Because Rennes routinely experiences significant protest turnouts that can escalate into street clashes, local officials stated they cannot guarantee the security required for a high-risk European football match on that date.

The fixture also carries heightened security risks regarding visiting supporters. Olympiacos fans are subject to strict oversight by the National Directorate for the Fight Against Hooliganism, following a late ban on away supporters during the Greek club’s previous Europa League fixture against Marseille at the Vélodrome, as noted by RMC Sport. With local security forces fully tied up managing labor protests, hosting the match safely on November 5 became impossible.

UEFA Reschedules Fixture to Wednesday Afternoon

Faced with the prospect of postponement or a move to a neutral venue, European football’s governing body intervened. UEFA confirmed that after consulting with local authorities and both clubs, the match was moved forward to Wednesday, November 4, with a 16:30 kickoff. This unusual scheduling places the match on a Wednesday, a timeslot typically reserved exclusively for the UEFA Champions League.

The social unrest in France has disrupted domestic fixtures as well. According to reporting by So Foot and regional outlet Maville, the Ligue 1 derby between FC Lorient and Stade Brestois, initially set for October 31, was shifted to Monday, November 2, due to local demonstrations. Meanwhile, So Foot reported that Rennes’ weekend Ligue 1 fixture against OGC Nice faced potential rescheduling away from its initial Saturday afternoon slot.

Next Confirmed Fixture Checkpoint

Stade Rennais will host Olympiacos at Roazhon Park on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at 16:30 CET, following the emergency schedule adjustment approved by UEFA.
