Toptier Sports Management has unveiled plans to celebrate Nigeria and Africa’s football legends while promoting better welfare, career opportunities and sustainable development for the next generation of players through the African Legends Football Game scheduled for November 8 in Lagos.

Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Toptier Sports Management, Chichi Nwoko, said the initiative goes beyond a nostalgic football encounter, describing it as an opportunity to recognise the contributions of former internationals who helped establish African football’s reputation on the global stage.

The match, presented in collaboration with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and its Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme, will take place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, as part of CANEX WKND 2026.

The event will commemorate 30 years of Nigeria’s remarkable football achievements in the mid-1990s, particularly the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations triumph in Tunisia and the historic 1996 Olympic football gold medal victory in Atlanta, where Nigeria defeated Brazil and Argentina.

Nwoko said the gathering of former internationals was intended to honour their sacrifices and reconnect them with supporters whose memories of their achievements remain strong.

“These men carried the hopes of a nation. Thirty years on, this is our chance to bring them home to the fans who never stopped celebrating them,” she said.

However, the Toptier boss stressed that celebrating past achievements must go hand in hand with building a sustainable football environment where players can enjoy meaningful opportunities beyond their active careers.

She said the initiative was designed to stimulate conversations about the structures and support systems required to protect athletes’ interests and prepare emerging talents for life after professional football.

“Thirty years ago, a generation of Nigerian footballers showed the world what African talent was capable of. The Legends Football Game is our way of saying thank you to them, and our chance to ask harder questions: what are we building for this generation and the next?” Nwoko said.

She added that the partnership with Afreximbank was driven by the ambition to create structures that would help African athletes translate their sporting achievements into sustainable opportunities beyond the pitch.

Toptier Sports Management has also been involved in efforts to strengthen the business and institutional foundations of Nigerian football, including partnerships with the Nigeria National League (NNL).

The November 8 encounter will feature 15 Nigerian football legends drawn from the celebrated 1994 Super Eagles and 1996 Olympic gold-winning generations against a selection of 13 former African internationals.

Nigeria’s contingent will include Daniel Amokachi, Garba Lawal, Ben Iroha, Victor Ikpeba, Austin Eguavoen, Aloy Agu, Mutiu Adepoju and Finidi George.

The African Legends team will parade former African Footballer of the Year Emmanuel Adebayor, Senegalese star El-Hadji Diouf, former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah and Ivorian international Didier Zokora.

Other notable names expected include Ghana’s John Paintsil and Anthony Baffoe, Senegal’s Khalilou Fadiga, Burkina Faso’s Aristide Bancé, Cameroon’s Rigobert Song and Alexandre Song, Zimbabwe’s Peter Ndlovu and Benjani Mwaruwari, as well as South African goalkeeper Brian Baloyi.

Beyond the headline fixture, the organisers have scheduled activities aimed at connecting the former internationals with young footballers.

The legends are expected to arrive in Lagos on November 6, ahead of a mini football camp involving 500 young players and a professional photoshoot.

On match day, the programme will feature performances by drummers, dancers and the Loud Urban Choir before the legends take to the pitch for the 5pm kick-off.

A special recognition ceremony will also be held after the match to honour members of Nigeria’s celebrated 1994 and 1996 football generations.

Gates will open at 1.30pm, while the match will be broadcast live on NTA, AIT and Silverbird between 5pm and 7pm for fans unable to attend the stadium.

The organisers said the initiative would use the influence and legacy of African football icons to celebrate the continent’s sporting heritage while drawing attention to the need for stronger structures to support present and future generations of athletes.
