High School Football: Best of Friday’s action, including the team and player of the night
Football

Here is the best of what took place across the East Metro in Minnesota high school football on Friday night as the Class 6A regular season came to a close.

Team of the night: Roseville

The Raiders downed Coon Rapids, 24-14, to win the Metro Maroon subdistrict and finish the regular season at 4-4, marking their best regular season since 2017.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” said senior quarterback Chase Browning, who threw for 162 yards and three touchdowns Friday. “I don’t even have words for it. We’ve all worked so hard. It’s great to see it finally paying off.”

Honorable mentions

Centennial: The Cougars dominated Anoka, 38-6, to likely solidify a No. 3 seed in the Class 6A playoffs and re-establish themselves as a legitimate threat to make a run deep into November. The six points marked the first time Anoka was held to single digits scoring all season.

Mounds View: The Mustangs locked up the Metro East subdistrict title all to themselves by surviving a scare from White Bear Lake to win, 22-16.

Mounds View quarterback Tanner Jude plunged in from a yard out with just 65 seconds to play to turn a two-point deficit into a six-point Mustangs lead after a successful 2-point try.

Preston Johnson hauled in the game-sealing interception on the Bears’ ensuing drive. The Mounds View defense allowed White Bear Lake quarterback Wyatt Stachowiak to complete just six of 24 pass attempts.

East Ridge: This fall likely hasn’t gone the way the Raptors envisioned, but they ended the regular season on a high note as Logan Tretter ran in a pair of touchdowns and Elias Mather returned an interception for a score late to put East Ridge’s 42-31 win over rival Woodbury on ice.

Player of the night: Mack Jurkovich, Forest Lake running back

Jurkovich ran for 245 yards and two touchdowns to lead Forest Lake past Stillwater, 31-13, and sew up a No. 2 seed for the Rangers in the Class 6A playoffs.

The St. Thomas commit finished the regular season with 1,600 yards on the ground.

Honorable mention

Manny Vargas, Park junior receiver: Vargas scored twice in the Wolfpack’s 18-10 win over Eastview — a receiving touchdown and a punt he returned 75 yards to the house.

Play of the night: Lakeville South’s game-winning field goal

Cougars’ sophomore kicker Dylan Nelson drilled a 36-yard attempt through the uprights with one second to play to lift Lakeville South to a 17-14 upset of Rosemount to muck up the south metro seeding process for the Class 6A playoffs.
