FISHERS, Ind. — The Toledo Walleye scored three second-period goals en route to their first win of the season, a 5-2 victory at the Indy Fuel on Friday.
Tag Bertuzzi notched a pair of goals, while both Brandon Hawkins and Quinn Preston finished with a goal and an assist. Marcus Crawford tallied three assists and Mitch Lewandowski added two more for Toledo (1-1).
Harrison Israels gave Indy a 1-0 lead just past the 10-minute mark of the opening period.
But late in the first, at the start of a power play, Bertuzzi scored his first goal to knot the score at 1. On the power play again 8:15 into the middle period, Brandon Hawkins made it 2-1.
The other goal scorer for the Walleye, Nick Nardecchia, converted at 17:42 of the second for a 3-1 advantage. Then not even two minutes later, Bertuzzi’s second goal pushed it to a three-goal advantage.
Jacob Perreault’s power-play goal less than three minutes into the third sliced the Fuel’s deficit in half. But the Walleye’s defense held the rest of the way, and Preston’s goal with 2:03 to go iced it.
Toledo now heads to Wheeling at 7:10 p.m. Saturday as it continues its road trip to begin the season.
