Tauranga rallies behind Tonga league team

The Tauranga Tongan community is preparing to hit the streets on Saturday evening in a show of support for Tonga's rugby league team ahead of its highly anticipated clash against Samoa.

Organisers are inviting families, supporters and community members to take part in the Tonga MMT Community Support Parade, which aims to celebrate Tongan culture, identity and community pride while rallying behind the national side.

Community event organiser Caroline Ikinepe said the match represented far more than a sporting contest for many Tongans.

"For Tonga and Samoa, this is more than just a rugby league match. It represents the pride of two Pacific nations with deep cultural connections, shared histories and passionate communities."

She said the rivalry between the two nations was built on respect, culture and friendly competition, with supporters across generations taking pride in backing their team.

The parade will see participants decorate their vehicles, wear Tonga's colours and travel together through Tauranga in a public display of support ahead of the game.

Ikinepe said the event was also about celebrating culture and helping younger generations stay connected to their heritage.

"For many of us, supporting Tonga is about more than the result on the scoreboard. It is about keeping our culture alive, teaching our children where they come from and standing proudly in our identity."

Organisers say they will work alongside police to ensure the event is safe and enjoyable, and are encouraging participants to drive responsibly and respect other road users.

The event is open to the community and organisers hope it will showcase the strength and pride of Tauranga's Pacific communities.
