Former Manchester United first-team assistant coach Benni McCarthy has raised eyebrows across the footballing landscape by backing Paris Saint-Germain mastermind Luis Enrique as the definitive choice to take over at Old Trafford, while openly admitting that any top manager accepting the role in its current state would be a total nutcase.

With current head coach Michael Carrick under intense pressure following a string of damaging results, the INEOS leadership group is actively evaluating long-term options to restore stability to Carrington.

Speaking on television, McCarthy—who served on Erik ten Hag’s backroom staff—insisted that Manchester United must target the absolute pinnacle of managerial talent rather than settling for short-term fixes.

McCarthy highlighted Luis Enrique as the world’s current best manager following his astonishing back-to-back UEFA Champions League triumphs with Paris Saint-Germain, praising the Spaniard’s unique ability to transform high-profile squads into relentless, highly disciplined pressing machines.

However, McCarthy was remarkably frank regarding the massive organizational hurdles awaiting any candidate brave enough to step into the Old Trafford hotseat mid-season.

Pointing to deep-rooted tactical inconsistency and intense media scrutiny, the former South Africa striker cautioned that only a manager with extraordinary self-belief—or a complete nutcase—would willingly leave a stable, elite setup like Paris Saint-Germain to tackle Manchester United's ongoing rebuild.

While alternative candidates like Eddie Howe, Antonio Conte, and Julian Nagelsmann remain heavily linked by various recruitment figures, McCarthy’s bold endorsement serves as a sharp reminder of the standard required to rebuild the club.

Whether Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the INEOS sports committee possess the ambition and pulling power to test Luis Enrique's resolve in Paris remains one of the most compelling narratives in world football.
