Barcelona may have missed out on signing one of Europe's most sought-after strikers, but the Spanish champions appear to have found an unexpected solution within their own squad.
Brazilian forward Raphinha has become a major attacking force after being moved from his usual wing position to play as a centre-forward, a role Barcelona had initially hoped to fill with Atletico Madrid's Julian Alvarez.
The 29-year-old has impressed under coach Hansi Flick, scoring regularly and helping Barcelona maintain their attacking strength despite failing to land their preferred transfer target.
Barcelona pursued Alvarez during the summer transfer window, hoping to bring the Argentine international from Atletico Madrid as a long-term solution in attack.
However, Atletico refused to release the striker, forcing Barcelona to consider other options.
Raphinha eventually emerged as the answer after Flick experimented with him in the central attacking position.
The Brazilian initially admitted having doubts about replacing a recognized centre-forward, especially given the pressure that comes with playing in a position previously occupied by Robert Lewandowski.
However, his performances have gradually silenced those concerns.
According to figures reported on Friday, November 6, Raphinha has scored 19 goals in 13 appearances across all competitions this season.
His contribution has been particularly important to Barcelona's attacking system, where his movement, pressing and ability to find space have created problems for opposing defenders.
Barcelona sporting director Deco has also praised the player's transformation, saying the club is pleased with the new role he has discovered.
The development has also changed the conversation surrounding Alvarez, who has struggled to reproduce his best form at Atletico.
The Argentine has managed two goals in 11 appearances, although he has shown signs of improvement in recent weeks.
Raphinha's impressive performances have also come at an important time for Barcelona, who are preparing for a difficult La Liga meeting against Atletico Madrid on Sunday.
The Catalan side will travel to the Metropolitan Stadium knowing that victory could strengthen their position at the top of the standings.
For Flick, the match offers another opportunity to demonstrate that Barcelona can compete at the highest level without depending on the striker they failed to sign.
