Viktor Gyökeres gave Arsenal supporters a performance to celebrate in Prague, but his contribution to the 2–1 Champions League victory over Slavia Prague could mean much more than simply helping his team collect three points. After a difficult start to the season in front of goal, the Swedish striker showed why Mikel Arteta continues to trust him with important opportunities, producing a goal and an assist when Arsenal needed his quality.
The striker's influence was evident from the opening stages. In the ninth minute, Gyökeres used his strength and awareness to control David Raya's long ball before releasing Noni Madueke with an excellent pass. The winger took the opportunity well, giving Arsenal an early advantage. It was an important contribution because Gyökeres did not need to score himself to make a difference; his movement and ability to bring others into the game helped create the breakthrough.
He then provided the finishing touch himself. In the 38th minute, Mikel Merino combined with the striker inside the penalty area before Gyökeres produced a composed curling finish into the far corner. It was the kind of goal that can build a centre-forward's confidence, particularly one who had gone through his first ten Arsenal appearances without scoring. Having recently found the net against Fleetwood Town, he now has another positive performance to build on.
However, what made this display encouraging was not only the goal and assist. Gyökeres also showed improvements in his link-up play, using his physical presence to hold the ball and connect with teammates. Those qualities matter because Arsenal need their centre-forward to contribute to the team's attacking movement, not simply wait inside the penalty area for scoring opportunities. His assist for Madueke demonstrated that he can help create chances as well as finish them.
Arteta will certainly welcome that development, but the manager's expectations remain high. Gyökeres has shown encouraging signs, yet the challenge is to maintain this level against stronger opposition and establish himself as a consistent attacking option. One impressive European night can improve confidence, but regular performances are what ultimately strengthen a player's position in a competitive squad.
Arsenal's late scare also provided an important reminder that individual brilliance cannot solve every problem. After dominating the first half, the Gunners struggled to maintain control following the restart. Slavia Prague increased the pressure, created dangerous opportunities and eventually scored through Wiktor Nowak in the 90th minute. Gabriel Magalhães made crucial goal-line clearances while David Raya produced important saves to preserve the victory.
That second-half decline will concern Arteta, but it should not overshadow Gyökeres' contribution. Arsenal have an important striker to develop, and performances like this give the manager more reasons to believe in his qualities. The next step is consistency: repeating the movement, link-up play and finishing that made him so influential in Prague.
Gyökeres has taken an important step in the right direction. Now he must show that this was not just one memorable Champions League night, but the beginning of a more consistent run in an Arsenal shirt.
