PS Raymond Omollo has highlighted the progress of the modernisation of Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Siaya Town, with the project expected to strengthen sports development and support Kenya’s preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

In a statement shared on Thursday, October 22, Omollo said the upgraded facility was positioning Siaya as a potential centre for regional sporting competitions, sports tourism and business opportunities.

The project was launched by President William Ruto in January 2025 and is being implemented through a partnership between the national and county governments.

To ensure the facility meets international standards, construction was placed under the Ministry of Defence, with KDF engineers overseeing the works.

Phase One has delivered a FIFA-standard football pitch measuring 110 by 68 metres, VVIP lounges, modern changing rooms and an outdoor basketball court.

The second phase is focused on increasing the stadium’s seating capacity from 5,500 to 20,000 spectators.

The works include five additional terraces and structural preparations for a roof canopy extending around the stadium.

The facility also features an eight-lane, 400-metre red-tartan athletics track, which is expected to provide opportunities for athletes to compete in national and international events.

Beyond hosting major matches, the upgraded stadium is expected to offer young people in Siaya and neighbouring counties improved opportunities to develop their football and athletics talents.

The investment could also benefit local businesses through increased activity during tournaments and other sporting events.

Omollo noted that sports infrastructure plays a role in building safer, more active communities by giving young people constructive activities and supporting organised public events.

The State Department for Internal Security and National Administration is coordinating with relevant stakeholders to help maintain a secure environment around the facility.
