Gabriel Has Given Arteta Another Reason to Trust Him, but Mosquera Is Still Waiting for His Chance

Gabriel Magalhães delivered another commanding performance as Arsenal defeated Everton 2-0 at the Emirates Stadium, but Cristhian Mosquera may have left the match wondering how long he will have to wait before getting a meaningful opportunity to prove himself.

The Brazilian defender was influential at both ends of the pitch, helping Arsenal establish an early lead before scoring the second goal, but his defensive contribution was arguably just as important as his finish.

Thierno Barry threatened to punish Arsenal after Ben White’s under-hit header presented him with a promising opportunity, only for David Raya to make a crucial save, while Gabriel also produced an important defensive intervention to prevent Everton from capitalising on another dangerous situation.

Gabriel’s performance demonstrated why Arteta continues to trust him in important matches, particularly when Arsenal are facing physically demanding opposition that requires strength, concentration and decisive defending.

However, the defender gave Arsenal a scare in the second half when he twisted his knee while clearing the ball and immediately required medical attention.

With William Saliba already unavailable, the possibility of losing another established centre-back was particularly concerning, and Mosquera was preparing to replace Gabriel before the Brazilian recovered sufficiently to continue.

For Mosquera, that moment represented a potential opportunity to make an impression, but it ultimately passed without him entering the match.

It would be understandable if the young defender felt frustrated, especially when opportunities to feature alongside Arsenal’s first-choice defenders have been limited by competition and the manager’s selection decisions.

Nevertheless, Gabriel’s importance to the team explains why Arteta would have been reluctant to withdraw him if he was able to continue safely.

Arsenal are competing for major honours, and the manager must balance giving developing players opportunities with selecting the strongest available team when matches remain in the balance.

Mosquera’s situation is therefore unlikely to change simply because he was close to coming on against Everton, but the upcoming cup fixture against Fleetwood Town could offer a more realistic opportunity for rotation.

With Arsenal facing a demanding schedule, Arteta will need to manage the workload of his established defenders, while players such as Mosquera must be ready to take advantage whenever they are selected.

A cup match could provide the Spaniard with valuable minutes to demonstrate his positional awareness, composure in possession and ability to cope with the physical demands of senior football.

However, he must treat such an opportunity as more than a chance to gain playing time; it is an opportunity to convince Arteta that he can be trusted when the stakes are higher.

Gabriel’s latest performance has reinforced his importance to Arsenal, but the club cannot afford to rely on the same defenders throughout an exhausting campaign.

If Mosquera can deliver when his opportunity arrives, Arteta may find that the competition for places becomes a genuine strength rather than a difficult selection problem.

For now, Gabriel remains firmly established, while Mosquera must be patient and prepared to seize his next chance.
