Brighton & Hove Albion claimed an impressive 1-0 victory over Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday, responding to their midweek Carabao Cup disappointment by taking all three Premier League points.
Fabian Hurzeler's team had lost to City on penalties in the cup competition after twice taking the lead during normal time.
However, they made their return to Manchester count, securing a league victory that moved them to within two points of their opponents.
The decisive moment came in the 11th minute following a defensive mistake from Matheus Nunes.
The City right-back failed to deal with the ball properly, allowing Yasin Ayari to capitalise from close range and put Brighton ahead.
City had opportunities to restore parity before the interval but struggled to make their chances count.
Iliman Ndiaye came closest, first heading Elliot Anderson's delivery wide before testing Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen with another attempt.
The Senegalese forward continued to trouble the visitors after the restart, producing a powerful effort that Verbruggen did well to push onto the crossbar.
Verbruggen remained City's biggest obstacle, making further important interventions to deny Nunes and keep Erling Haaland from finding an equaliser.
Brighton also threatened to extend their advantage. Maxim de Cuyper wasted a promising opportunity from close range before forcing Gianluigi Donnarumma into a save with a header.
Despite those missed chances, the visitors protected their narrow advantage until the final whistle.
The result strengthens Brighton's position among the Premier League's leading sides and gives Hurzeler's team an important response after their cup exit.
For City, the defeat represents another setback after consecutive league losses.
