Arsenal Crash Out of Carabao Cup as Fleetwood Win on Penalties and Dowman Sees Red

Arsenal suffered one of the biggest upsets of the Carabao Cup season after League Two side Fleetwood Town eliminated them on penalties on Tuesday night. The fourth-round encounter at Highbury Stadium ended 1-1 before Fleetwood secured a 5-3 shootout victory. What was expected to be a comfortable evening for Mikel Arteta's side instead became a historic occasion for the home supporters, with Arsenal's disappointing performance raising questions about their squad depth and preparation.

The evening began unusually when an unauthorised drone appeared above the stadium shortly after kick-off. Referee Michael Salisbury temporarily stopped the match and consulted stadium officials before allowing play to resume following a delay of approximately eight minutes. Although the interruption affected both teams, Fleetwood settled into the contest and demonstrated the determination required to challenge their Premier League opponents.

Fleetwood took the lead through Aaron Loupalo-Bi, who capitalised on a defensive mistake by young Arsenal defender Marli Salmon. The forward showed strength to get past Salmon before finishing beyond goalkeeper Illan Meslier. Arsenal attempted to respond through greater possession and attacking pressure, but their finishing lacked precision. Despite having several opportunities to equalise, the visitors reached half-time trailing by one goal.

Arteta responded by introducing Martin Ødegaard and Ben White at the beginning of the second half. The changes improved Arsenal's organisation, particularly in midfield, where Ødegaard helped increase the speed of their passing. Their response produced an equaliser in the 50th minute when Viktor Gyökeres converted from close range following an attacking move involving Ceadach O'Neill. The goal appeared to give Arsenal an opportunity to take control of the match.

However, the visitors struggled to turn their improved possession into a winning goal. Kai Havertz missed several promising opportunities, while Fleetwood continued to defend with determination. Arsenal's inability to convert their chances allowed the home side to remain competitive as the match entered its closing stages. Against lower-league opposition, such wastefulness can become costly because every missed opportunity gives the underdogs renewed confidence.

The situation became more difficult for Arsenal when teenage winger Max Dowman received a red card with approximately five minutes remaining. The youngster reacted to a strong challenge from Harrison Neal and was dismissed after appearing to kick out at the Fleetwood player. Although the decision may generate debate, it left Arsenal with ten players during a crucial period. The incident also highlighted the importance of maintaining discipline when matches become frustrating.

Neither side managed to find another goal, sending the contest to a penalty shootout. Fleetwood converted all five of their attempts, while Arsenal scored three of their four penalties. The result completed a remarkable victory for the League Two club and brought Arsenal's hopes of winning the Carabao Cup to an unexpected end. For Fleetwood, eliminating the reigning Premier League champions represents an achievement that supporters will remember for years.

Arteta's decision to make nine changes to the team that defeated Everton in the Premier League will inevitably attract scrutiny. Rotation was understandable given Arsenal's demanding schedule and their upcoming league encounter with Liverpool. However, the performance demonstrated that selecting talented individuals does not automatically produce an effective team. Players who rarely start together can struggle to develop the understanding required to control difficult matches.

The defensive mistake that led to Fleetwood's goal was particularly damaging, but responsibility for the defeat should not fall entirely on Salmon. Arsenal had sufficient time and attacking quality to recover from the setback. Their failure to take advantage of scoring opportunities ultimately proved just as important as the opening goal. A team competing for major honours must be capable of responding more effectively when unexpected problems arise.

Fleetwood deserve considerable credit for their organisation and determination. Matt Lawlor's players faced opponents with significantly greater resources and experience, yet they remained disciplined throughout the encounter. Their willingness to compete physically and defend under pressure helped prevent Arsenal from establishing complete control. The victory demonstrates why domestic cup competitions continue to produce memorable moments despite the financial differences between clubs.

For Arsenal, attention now turns towards Sunday's Premier League meeting with Liverpool at Anfield. The defeat may not directly affect their league position, but it creates an immediate challenge for Arteta and his players. They must recover quickly, address the mistakes exposed by Fleetwood and ensure that disappointment does not influence their next performance.

Ultimately, the result serves as a reminder that reputation alone cannot guarantee success in football. Arsenal entered the match as overwhelming favourites but failed to deliver the performance required to progress. Fleetwood approached the occasion with belief and earned their place in the next round through determination and composure. For Arteta, the challenge is to ensure that this embarrassing cup exit becomes a lesson rather than the beginning of a wid er decline.
