Liverpool suffered their first defeat of this season's UEFA Champions League campaign after Fenerbahce staged a dramatic late comeback to claim a 3-2 victory in an entertaining encounter in Istanbul.
The Reds appeared to be heading towards another positive result after taking the lead twice, but the Turkish side showed remarkable determination to turn the contest around and collect all three points.
Liverpool made a promising start, with teenage midfielder Trey Nyoni opening the scoring through a volley that took a deflection off Kojo Peprah Oppong before finding its way past goalkeeper Ederson. The goal was a special moment for the 19-year-old, marking his first senior goal for the club.
Fenerbahce responded before the break when Mason Greenwood's free-kick changed direction after hitting Jeremy Jacquet, leaving Alisson Becker with little chance of stopping the effort.
Liverpool introduced Alexander Isak, Florian Wirtz and Cody Gakpo in the second half as they searched for a winning goal. Their substitutions quickly made an impact, with Gakpo setting up Isak to restore the visitors' advantage through a close-range header.
However, Fenerbahce refused to surrender. Just four minutes later, N'Golo Kante delivered a dangerous ball into the penalty area, and Gakpo's attempted defensive clearance fell perfectly for Archie Brown, who finished from close range.
The home supporters were sent into celebrations when Brown turned provider, delivering a cross that Vedat Muriqi headed into the right corner to complete the remarkable comeback.
The victory was an important achievement for interim coach Dirk Kuyt, who has connections with both clubs. It also gave Fenerbahce their first Champions League victory of the season.
Meanwhile, Liverpool will be disappointed after losing their perfect record in the competition. The defeat also extended their difficult run in Istanbul, where they have now suffered six consecutive defeats against Turkish opposition.
