Gian Piero Gasperini believes a victory against Napoli could give Roma a major psychological boost as the two Italian heavyweights prepare for a high-stakes Serie A showdown.

Speaking to DAZN shortly before kick-off, the Roma manager described the encounter as a high-level contest, highlighting the quality of both teams and the number of important players involved.

For Gasperini, the match represents more than three points. He believes winning away in Naples could strengthen Roma’s confidence and reinforce their belief in what they can achieve this season.

“Winning in Naples would be a step towards a special kind of awareness,” Gasperini explained, adding that a victory would undoubtedly provide a significant boost, even though the campaign remains long.

The Roma boss also made a notable selection decision, handing Devyne Rensch a starting role on the wing. Bryan Cristante, meanwhile, returned to the starting line-up after recovering from injury.

Gasperini praised Cristante’s versatility, explaining that the midfielder gives Roma additional tactical options and allows other players greater freedom to move forward.

The manager also pointed to the demands of the position, noting that Roma have frequently relied on the same players in midfield. Cristante’s return could therefore provide valuable flexibility during a demanding period of the season.

Roma’s attacking set-up features Donyell Malen and Matías Soulé, with Gasperini hoping his selections can help the visitors compete against a strong Napoli side.

The coach was careful not to describe the fixture as season-defining, stressing that plenty of football remains to be played. Nevertheless, he made clear that securing a result in Naples would carry considerable significance.

With both clubs seeking momentum and confidence, the showdown offers Roma an opportunity to make a statement against one of their toughest domestic rivals.

For Gasperini, the mission is clear: deliver a performance capable of turning a difficult away fixture into a major step forward for Roma.
