Kenyan athlete Sheila Chepkirui has once again demonstrated her class on the international stage after winning the women's race at the 2026 New York City Marathon, delivering another memorable moment for the country's athletics fraternity.
Chepkirui produced a strong performance to cross the finish line in 2:24:36, reclaiming the title she first won in 2024. Her latest success confirmed her ability to compete at the highest level of international marathon running.
The race attracted a competitive field, with Chepkirui facing stiff opposition from defending champion Hellen Obiri and several international stars. However, the Kenyan prevailed in the closing stages to secure the prestigious crown.
American Jessica McClain finished second in 2:24:42, while Obiri settled for third after clocking 2:24:43. Veteran Kenyan runner Edna Kiplagat finished fourth, with compatriot Mercy Chelangat completing the top five.
The strong Kenyan representation among the leading finishers highlighted the country's continued depth in women's long-distance running.
Chepkirui's triumph also provided another reminder of Kenya's rich marathon tradition, which has produced numerous champions across major international road races.
However, the men's competition presented a different outcome, with Sweden's Andreas Almgren claiming victory in 2:06:01 on his marathon debut. Kenya's defending champion Benson Kipruto finished fourth, missing out on a podium position.
The contrasting results demonstrated the increasing competitiveness of international marathon running, where athletes from different countries are challenging Kenya's established dominance.
For Chepkirui, the New York victory represents another significant achievement in a career characterised by determination and consistency.
Her performance is expected to inspire upcoming Kenyan runners as the country continues its pursuit of excellence in global athletics competitions.
