Lionel Messi Opens Up About His Regret Over Not Learning English Earlier

Argentine football star Lionel Messi has revealed that one of his personal regrets is not learning English when he was younger. Despite achieving major success in football, the Inter Miami forward says the language barrier has sometimes made it difficult for him to communicate with people he admires.

Speaking on the Mexican podcast Miro de Atras, Messi reflected on the opportunities he had to study English during his childhood but did not take advantage of them.

“I regret many things. Not having learned English as a boy. I had the time to have at least studied English, and I didn't do it. I deeply regret it,” Messi said.

The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner explained that he had experienced situations where he met prominent personalities but could not comfortably hold conversations with them in English. He described feeling “half ignorant” in such moments and wished he had made better use of his time when he was younger.

Messi's comments highlight the importance of education and learning skills beyond professional work. Although football has taken him to different countries and introduced him to people from various backgrounds, he believes learning another language would have helped him communicate more freely.

The Argentina captain also said that his experience has influenced the advice he gives his children. He encourages them to value education, study hard and prepare themselves for future opportunities.

Messi moved from Rosario, Argentina, to Barcelona at the age of 13 to join the club's youth academy, La Masia. His early move to Spain shaped much of his life, as he developed into one of football's most successful players while continuing his education there.

Throughout his career, Messi has won numerous individual and team honours, including the 2022 FIFA World Cup with Argentina.

His admission serves as a reminder that personal development remains important at every stage of life. While professional achievements can bring recognition and success, education and communication skills can also make a meaningful difference.

For young people, Messi's message is simple: take learning seriously and make use of opportunities while they are available.
