Dortmund Stun Werder Bremen With Last-Minute Winner to Reach Next Round of German Cup

souBorussia Dortmund have booked their place in the last 16 of the German DFB-Pokal after defeating Werder Bremen 3-2 in a thrilling match on Tuesday, October 27, 2026.

The Black and Yellow side secured the victory at Signal Iduna Park thanks to a late free-kick from Marcel Sabitzer, ending Bremen’s hopes of progressing in the competition. The win keeps Dortmund’s dream of lifting the German Cup alive.

Dortmund started the match strongly and took the lead in the sixth minute through Serhou Guirassy, who finished from close range after good work involving Julian Ryerson.

The hosts continued to put pressure on their opponents and doubled their advantage in the 17th minute. Carney Chukwuemeka scored after Jobe Bellingham helped create the opportunity, giving Dortmund a comfortable 2-0 lead.

At that stage, Dortmund appeared to be in control of the match, while Werder Bremen struggled to find a way through the home side’s defence.

However, the game changed after the break as Bremen fought their way back into the contest.

Bremen reduced the deficit in the 65th minute when Niclas Füllkrug converted a penalty after Dortmund were penalised for a foul inside the box.

Just four minutes later, Füllkrug struck again to level the score at 2-2. His second goal put Dortmund under pressure and raised hopes that Bremen could complete a remarkable comeback.

With the match heading towards extra time, Dortmund needed another moment of quality to avoid a difficult finish. Sabitzer provided it in the third minute of stoppage time, curling a free-kick into the net to give the home side a dramatic 3-2 victory.

The late goal sparked celebrations among Dortmund supporters, who watched their team escape a difficult situation and secure qualification for the next round.

The victory was important for Dortmund, but the match also exposed areas the team will need to improve. After building a two-goal lead, they allowed Bremen back into the game and nearly lost control of the contest.

Coach Niko Kovač will be pleased that his players found a way to win, although the team will need to defend better in future matches if they hope to go far in the competition.

Dortmund now turn their attention to the next stage of the DFB-Pokal, where the remaining teams will compete for a place in the quarter-finals.

The German Cup offers Dortmund another opportunity to win silverware this season. However, the competition remains challenging, with several strong teams also hoping to lift the trophy.
