The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed Nigerian football administrator Samson Adamu as its new General Secretary, placing him at the helm of the organisation’s day-to-day administration.

Adamu’s appointment was announced on Sunday, November 1, following approval by the CAF Executive Committee after what the continental governing body described as a comprehensive recruitment process.

He had been serving in an acting capacity since March 2026, following the departure of former General Secretary Veron Mosengo-Omba, who later became president of the football federation in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

CAF President Patrice Motsepe said the recruitment exercise involved advertising the position widely and interviewing several candidates before settling on Adamu.

Adamu joined CAF in 2018 as Director of Competitions before progressing to become Director of Tournaments and Events. During his eight years at the organisation, he played a significant role in coordinating major continental competitions, including the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

His experience in tournament organisation and football administration is expected to provide continuity as CAF pursues its strategic priorities and strengthens the management of competitions across the continent.

The new General Secretary is also a graduate of the FIFA Master programme in International Management, Law and Humanities of Sport, giving him an academic background in sports governance and administration.

His appointment is a significant milestone for Nigeria, as he becomes the first Nigerian to hold the position since CAF was established in 1957.

Adamu is the son of former FIFA Executive Committee member Amos Adamu, who was banned by FIFA in 2010 for breaching its bribery rules.

In his new role, Adamu will oversee CAF’s secretariat and coordinate the implementation of decisions made by the organisation’s leadership.
