Sports PS Reveals Bayern Munich vs Ajax Match at Talanta Will Be Funded by Sponsors, Not Government

Sports Principal Secretary Elijah Mwangi has finally addressed concerns surrounding the funding of the highly anticipated Bayern Munich versus Ajax match scheduled for January 5, 2027, at Talanta Stadium.

Mwangi revealed that the international football encounter will be financed through sponsorships, dismissing concerns that the government will use taxpayers' money to organise the high-profile sporting event.

His clarification comes amid growing public interest in the preparations for the historic fixture, which is expected to attract international attention and thousands of football enthusiasts.

The match will feature German giants Bayern Munich and Dutch powerhouse Ajax, two clubs with enormous international followings and impressive histories in European football

Speaking about the arrangements, Mwangi maintained that sponsors would shoulder the financial responsibility for hosting the encounter rather than relying on direct government funding.

The announcement is likely to ease concerns among Kenyans who have questioned whether public resources should be committed to bringing European football clubs into the country.

The January 5 encounter is particularly significant because it will officially mark the inauguration of the 60,000-capacity Raila Odinga International Stadium, formerly known as Talanta Stadium.

The modern sporting facility, located along Ngong Road in Nairobi, is among the major infrastructure projects expected to strengthen Kenya's capacity to host international sporting competitions.

President William Ruto previously announced the planned fixture, describing it as an important opportunity to showcase Kenya's sporting potential to the international community.

Bayern Munich, one of Europe's most successful football clubs, has won the UEFA Champions League six times, while Ajax has lifted the prestigious trophy four times.

Their appearance in Nairobi is expected to generate excitement among Kenyan football supporters who rarely get opportunities to watch such European football giants play locally.

Beyond entertainment, the event could also create opportunities for businesses operating in hospitality, tourism, transport and other sectors.

Kenya is also preparing to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations alongside Uganda and Tanzania, making the stadium's inauguration particularly important.

However, questions remain over the identities of the sponsors, their financial contributions and the overall cost of organising the match.

Mwangi's clarification has placed sponsorship at the centre of the funding arrangements, although Kenyans may still demand greater transparency.

The January 5 showdown will therefore be an important test of Kenya's ability to attract major sporting events without placing unnecessary financial pressure on taxpayers.
